I have just been to look at a job which involved removing the coving from 5 ceilings, over boarding 5 ceilings and skimming the 5 ceilings. they were 3 metres high and 3 of them had large bays, i guessed about 80m2 worth of reboarding and skimming.

The guy asked me to price it cash and labour only so i said £1000 to which he nearly fell over, he said the guy before me said £350 !!!!! WTF.

I told him to call me before he pays the man and if his work is shoddy (which it will be) i am gonna phone him up and give him f**k.

Its gone all mad an absolute nightmare now 3 months ago was fine with prices now I no the only way to get the work is to drop my rates and by a lump inall But £350 to over board and skim 5 ceilings is a JOKE >:(

does anyone believe the builders though or are they all giving it ...ooooh its a reccesion someone said he'd do my house for 20p can you match it ........or are they having us on?

Think it's a bit off both innit , every body seems to be jumpin on the "ooh it's a recession " bandwagon and that include blue chip company's

landlord asked me how much to skim a ceiling and laffed when i told him 'youll not get that, theres a recession on'...

'does that mean youre dropping the rent then?'..

tw't soon shut up..

i hate this about this job too do a clean neat job with all rubbish removed material picked up perhaps floor covering to buy and put down its immposible to make the right amount of money which in my humble oppinion for a trades man should be 150 a day min and thats a result for whoever is getting the work done.

another of my pet hates is when you ve finished your job your money not right there i cant find anyone to do work in my house who wont want paying the second the job is done.i d love to say actually no friday isnt ok i want my effging money now cappiche

yea somelow prices but if you can show ur good and give a middle price you will usually get the job IMO

best thing to do is ask 'will it be cash?' before you give them the quote...
then quote it at whatever you would anyway..

they think youve done em a favour, and usually have the cash ready... ;D

just the mention of the word usually does the trick ;)

i bet they wont mess about finding the joist, screw straight into the old ceilings. i wouldnt skim them for that, let alone board as well.

never do it for cash unless i know them, know a carpit fitter, he got a call from someone asking if he would supply and fit a carpit, priced it and got the order, fitted it and the custmer said, would you like cash, yes he said. thought no more of it. put his accounts in and the revenue investergated him. they wanted to this invoice for the job he done for cash and wanted to see it in his books. the customer worked for the revenue. he got hamered big time by the taxman. so be carefull lads who you except cash from if youe not going to book it in.

yeah i hear alot of storeys. i hear alot of people just guess there tax return every year and just take a big return! they must be mad. my books look gd thank f**k

what a lot of people dont understand about the tax man, he does not have to prove you have not booked some income, its your job to prove you have not. there bastards , trust me i know.
