The building firm I subbie to have asked me to attend a health & safety day.
I went to it last year but us subbies don't get paid >:( the blokes on the books do. They reckon we have to go or can't work for them.
I was wondering if anyone knows wether a cscs card would get me out of attending these unpaid days off?

I haven't got mine yet as most my work is insurance work for firms & domestic work, so not been on site for a couple of years but if this card gets me out of this health & safety bull s h it I'm gonna sort it asap.

Wouldn't it be classed as a site induction day? Ask the firm you work for, however, you'll need a CSCS at some point.

sounds like the site is doing an induction day to explain their safety rules to the lads to cover their behinds... last job i was on it was a simple "Hello lads you know the score... sign the book here" which we did... induction over with and straight to work.... if you have to go to a chemical plant for example the induction will take between 4 to 8 hours.... so i would bill them day work rates... get yourself a cscs cd off ebay for £3.00 https://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=cscs&_sacat=See-All-Categoriesdo a few sample tests then book your test £17.00 Link Removed

It's more than a site induction I've had them before,
This is a whole day unpaid 8am - 4pm
Last year listened to this tosser gabbling on for 8hrs.
Like you say they are just covering their arse's.
But as a subbie i was told I have to do it or can't work on their jobs,
the other option is pay for it myself which I suppose ain't cheap?
But there are other subbies like sparkys who don't have to go as they do there own health & safety?
That's why I wondered if the cscs card would cover me for the health & safety side
seen as for the cscs card you have to pass the health & safety test.

like rendersytems says, sometimes its a 'hello, done one of these before? good, sign the book'. other times it'll take all morning, you have to do it whether you've got a cscs card or not and you should get paid for it on your day rate or whatever, (i always have anyway)

That's what I thought pug but last time they stopped us a days money so wasn't to happy about that.
I'll have to have a word with them then, surely they should pay or even give you receipt for a training day or something?
F##king joke >:(

Have any one done the iif with laing o'rourke? you got to do an induction which takes half a day then you have to do the iif which is another half day so you basically lose 2 days on site as you cant get alot done by the time you get out >:(

Oh forgot to say they also ask us to fill a form in for all the power tools on our vans & then we have to take them all to their office for pat testing.
And fill timesheets in.
Blokes on the books I can understand but subbies timesheets ??? We already do invoices!
They reckon the timesheets are to do with health & safety.

Well I filled a form in for the power tools last year & never had them pat tested yet ???
And as for doing timesheets I stopped after a few weeks as I found out the blokes on the books weren't doing them so I thought f##k that.

Anyone else come across this being a subbie?

I refused to do it this year for that reason i would not be getting paid, this was for one of the biggest companies in London if not the biggest they then said i would have to leave the site i said you make me leave the site and prevent me from working i will to take you to what ever court it takes to fight this, the guy just walked away shaking his head ide just done his head in anyway word came back that i could stay on site but was not allowed not to use the toilets cos i had not been inducted. Not sure this would work all the time but when your an old git like me looking like something out of the hills have eyes it might.
