Damp showing in render

Hi guys.

Just had a chimney breast removed.
Had a plasterer round to do some work. Think he’s used bonding to render we’re the chimney was. See pic.

Can see visible damp running up the wall.

Can I get away with chipping it away up to 1.2 metres and replacing with renderlite?

Can I skim straight over that then? 2 layers?

Cheers

Be honest.......no (plasterer) has been over and done any work.

I’ve not touched it! I’ve been warned by everyone to stay clear from plastering. Too much skill involved!

Didn’t see the chap who did it. Was the joiners mate. Supposedly coming back when there’s other bits to do.

Should I tell him not to bother? Any idea what’s involved to sort it?

Cheers

@choppa's right, you did that, didn't you? Why would you get a plasterer to apply the base and finish it yourself? Looks like the work of someone who's been doing some Youtube research. You can't seriously be thinking about skimming over that?

Then it went wrong and you found Rendalite on Google.

Anyway, the answer is no. If you don't fix the damp, then you may as well PVA it and skim over that. It'll be half the work and do you just as much good.

No spread has done that!
It’s got D.I.Yer written all over it!

There’s no harm in asking stuff I have loads to learn still , tbh I have no shame in just asking what I don’t know
Whack what’s on the wall off and let’s see what the score is underneath

There’s no harm in asking as long as people are truthful ffs!

Hand on heart I didn’t do it. He’s left his radio and bags of miltifinish so assuming he’s coming back.

Any suggestions on how much it would cost to sort a wall out like that? Can it be sorted as it is?

Bingo. I was just thinking exactly that...if you lie to people trying to help you it just becomes impossible.

I tried to lie to the vet once about what I'd done to my cat. Didn't fancy buying two bottles of Frontline. It seemed to me that it was a dosage issue, so I saved a bit of the dog's frontline and put it on the cat, totally ignoring the label.

FOR DOGS ONLY. DO NOT PUT ON CATS

Lo and behold, about 12 hrs later, poor old Bad Apple had to be rushed to the vets with a bad case of disco leg.

Aha, said the vet. Dog frontline, I see?

Umm...no, says me.

Better fess up or the cat'll die, says the vet.

I put it on the deg and the two of them play together says me.

And the vet went to work. Had to give him atropine which is the same stuff that squaddies use for nerve agent poisoning. Cost me a LOT more than a bottle of cat flea juice.

No. You'll seal the damp in and it will appear somewhere else...up the sides, under your laminate floor....somewhere. It won't just go away. That damp is very substantial too.

Needs hacked off and investigated.

Something is still not right about this.

I’ve had a damp proof company round. It’s them who suggested renderlite. Once they’ve injected the walls and painted on a tanking paint below the holes.

This was before the chimney was removed though as if wasn’t evident in the room in the picture at the time

Right. Now we're getting somewhere.

My suggestion to you is to allow the damp proofing company to do the job start to finish. Not a joiner's mate in sight here. If it goes wrong, then they will say that the joiner's mate f**k*d it up and not come back.

If you need to save a little cash, then hack that whatever it is off yourself and call a proper company. Call three in fact, and go with the middle quote.

Feel free to ask on here about what they tell you. There are one or two specialists floating about.

If you want price for the damp proof guys think what you think would be expensive then times it by 5

There you go OP....that's proper advice and why you have to pay a plasterer.
Now, if you do decide to tackle it yourself or let the joiner's mate do it, then be sure to cross trowel the upstroke and laquer, sbr mix the pva and 2nd trowel and mediflex, sponging if necessary - ignore that Welsh c**t who sponges every trowel....s*p*r*lex is only any good in certain situations.

Speedskim it off and you're done!

f**k**g love it....all you've got to say is that welsh c**t and people know exactly who you're on about.

Have you any idea how ace that is?

I have no problem with the Loyal Men of Wales.
