Hi all got a job come up pebble dashing a garage...got to rerender where its blown...blend in pebble dash. First time doing pebble dash...once top coat is on do u dash straight away in sections? do u mix pebbles with cement slurry before dashing?

also any tips on how to render a porthole reveal?

mate dashing isn't that easy,( if you want A GOOD FINISH) seriously.
Especially if you gotta blend it into a dashed wall thats un painted.
Just let the top coat stand for 10 mins the dash it dry, youll get it every where if you wet dashit.
As for rendering port hole window reveal.id try to slit back of boards and spray with water and bend them to shape and skim, else u gonna have to make a template out of wood.
To be honset ive never done a porthole window so there may be an easier way ??????

the trick to doing a port hole is to get the boat on dry land. portholes are usually made from brass not render.

hope this helps :)

can't be much worse than whats already there lol...customer seems to have patched half the house himself. I told him it isn't gonna match..just blend he said no worries and showed me the side of the house looked like he had thrown rocks at the wall!

erm boat? rb is that supposed to be funny?

ok 'round window' how do i render the reveal of an external round window? do i use beads of some sort? thanks

;D

you could either get yerself a peice of 1/2" ply bigger than the hole, cut a round hole the diameter of your finished reveal, tack it face on with 4 masonary nails (dont go mad you wanna be able to tease it off in a minute) and fill the reveal. let it pull in and remove your former, fill in the edges and brush em in..
good luck dashing it though....

or

if its anywhere near 2'6" or 2'9" across 2 arch kits will do it nicely, might have to trim the reveal depth a bit and take your time setting em up but once theyre set youve got as long as you need both on the reveal and on the face..
arch kits are generally 1/4 circles x 2..

cheers Chris...got ya..might try making a 1/4 circle outta ply and just move it round as i go...reckon if i keep the ply wet should be ok...doesn't have to be perfect and i'll dash it by hand...or rather stick a few pebbles in!

Seen some guys top the render with some kind of coating before dashing...say if its gone off to much what would u use?

if your gonna use plywood mate just make the whole cirlce.. much easier than moving a quarter..
arch kits are quarters cos they fit in the box easier..
with dashing its scratch coated then they call they top coat a butter coat.. or reciever..

you watch.. church'll have some amazing tip for em like filling a sock with spa, cutting a tiny hole in the end and swinging it round inside the reveal.. or something.. i hate anything like dashing..

my tip would be.. wait till the blokes not looking... nip round the side of the house with an old trowel and scrape the dash with it till youve got enough to patch in your window.. just dont go too mad in one spot or youll leave it bald..
;D

Cheers Chris will give the sock thing a go sounds good ;D , no real tips for dashing a bulls eye windows apart from whats been mentioned regarding cutting a circle out of a piece of 6mm ply it has to be smaller than the windows opening size temperally fix to the front of the wall fill in the reveal with render and dash take off the ply and work into the dashing free hand carefully, the main tip for making good patches is control the suction from the edges of existing render and when your filling the patch out with the butter coat leave the thickness back by about 5mm depending on what size stone or shingle you are using other wise when you dash it the stone will be proud and look different to the rest of the wall.

Thanks...so scratch then a butter coat? is the butter coat fairly wet?

Just thinking to me it would kind of make sense to scatch, then top coat rule off etc then put a receiver coat on...because how do u rule off the next section if you have just dashed the last if u see what i mean, u have nothing to work off?

duno wot your all talkin about? but sounds gd lol..im lookin at takein on a renderin course a.s.a.p

so when dashing its only 2 coats scratch and then top coat (receiver)?

what i meant is if you are doing a large wall do u dash as you go onto top coat or complete the top coat first then put a receiver coat on for dashing? ???

First scratch coat then leave a few days then top coat (receiver) and dash, put waterproofer in the first coat and give it a light spray of water before you put on the top coat once the top coat is on put some dust or plastic sheets down to collect the falling stone (you can use it again) keep the stone wet but not soaked.

has the port hole got to be stonedashed ? if yes then you should free hand it. if no then those nice plastic angle beads will bend round lovely!
As for the stone dashing when patching in, keep the top coat back a bit(just a bit), so by the time the stones are on they are flush with the existing.
And use a pee shooter to put the stones on!
