Any damp proofing gurus on here ?

Just been to look at a job, old house. Walls are slightly damp, Damp company been out and confirmed its not rising damp although the issue is opto about 1200 high, instead the damp is moisture pulling through from the bricks.

If the problem area is hacked off and dried out, will floating it out with dry coat, then skim stop it pulling through ?

Do i need to treat the brick work with owt ? prior to floating ?

Apollogies for the bone questions but damp isnt really my bag.

Cheers

Fair one bud, not checked the pointing, shes adamant she wants it re plastered, so just looking at alternatives. Maybe if i repoint, hack off dehumidifier in to dry out, float it out and skim. When you use the renovating plaster do you get it straight on or treat the brickwork with anything before hand ?? PVA SBR maybe ?

Like any damp proofing mate you need to sort out where the water is getting in externally before you plaster it hack it off then let it dry out as well before you plaster as you will end up just trapping the water into the wall.

As Bod says check the exterior of the wall to see if the pointing is shot first causing the penetrating damp, put a pic up so we can see.

I always knock up an SBR slurry and brush it on to the brickwork before i use the renovating plaster.......(Think irish calls it scudding) hopefull u'll find it just need repointing.....:RpS_thumbup:

Builders lately have been asking me to hack off, then put laminate floor underlay on the walls. Then fix plasterboards to the wall with plastic insulation fixings and skim.

It seems to work!

well as it is forming some sort !! of tanking system you can see why !but where is the guarantee's for the customer ?.
fix leak first it may well be penetrating damp, or even a leaking down -pipe just check and fix first

Guarantee lies with the builder....I just do as I'm asked. The cause of the problem should obviously be addressed first.

use SBR. paint it on generously then when it has dryed back with drycoat. Finish with board finish the next day as it is for low suction backgrounds.
