DYI - Internal Plastering Advice

Hi,

Whilst googling, I came across this forum and after few days of reading the forum I'm more confused than before on what to do next ...:) so hopefully I can get some advice.

I did "dot n dab" and skimming on previous Flats where I lived ( '90+ builds ) and never had any issues, but now I bought a semi detached house ( '45 - '50 build ) and thought it's a good idea* to remove old plaster & rendering from a bedroom and start from brick...

My 1st plan was to "dot n dab" directly onto brick with standard Gyproc Plasterboard and Gyproc DriWall Adhesive then skim 2 x 1mm Multifinish coats on all 4 walls, but the more I read the more I am concerned about introducing damp/moisture issues.
I don't see any previous damp signs and all bricks look to be in a good condition but most people say ( including British Gypsum Technical Helpline) not to "dot n dab" plasterboard on the 2 Internal/External walls.

With the new info my 2nd plan was to: "dot n dab" the 2 Internal/Internal walls and use Gyproc Hard Wall as undercoat + Multifinish on the 2 Internal/External Walls; no PVA or anything else, just clean the bricks properly.

For 2 Internal/External Walls:
  • 2 x 11mm Coats - Hard Wall
  • 2 x 1mm Coats - Multifinish
For 2 Internal/Internal Walls:
  • "dot n dab" DriWall Adhesive / Plasterboard
  • 2 x 1mm Coats - Multifinish

Reading on this forum I see that not everyone is a fan of Hard Wall for undercoat + Lime plastering fans add to the confusion + to PVA or not to PVA on bricks ( either for "dot n dab" or undercoat ).

Previous setup was: 20mm sand and cement rendering + 2mm plastering.

*wife thought it is a good idea! I know!!! please be gentle :D

The important thing you need to establish is if your house has a cavity or solid wall.

Hi,

Thank you for replies.

It is a solid wall.

Is not about the money, I just want to do it myself; if I mess it up I will call for help, I know it will be more expensive to fix it but I do want to do it.

I attached 2 pics with the walls.

Hack it all off! Clean up. Call a spread ( one with good rep) and let him render & set the old fashioned way.

Thank You Zombie, much appreciated.
Sand and Cement it is, then skim.

Just out of curiosity, why is it that bad to do with Hard Wall?

Normal pb will be fine on internal walls but the external (cavity or not) can be dabbed using insulated 75mm boards and secured with a fixing if you want to be extra safe . PVA watered down will be fine on the brick work and will help to kill the dust and control suction .Skim away .ps I have done this in my house which has no cavity up stairs and have had no problems .

Thank you Danny and Beader.
I thought of those insulated boards which come with holes, ready for fixing into walls but their advice was not to use on those facing external walls as the screws might introduce the moisture.

Nicm,
As I said, at the moment I would like to do it myself. The point to ask in this discussion forum is to see different opinions and how other people are doing, might be useful for others.
If all answers on specialised forums would be: hire an expert or take first advice and go then there won’t ve any discussions forums.

If no cavity i.d put insulation boards on. Had a nightmare with my house till i used them

Absolutely

Do it for your own self gratification I know where you are coming from

Stop talking shite Danny.
Loads of "plasterers" wouldn't make a decent job of this let alone someone into DYI! I assume that stands for Do Yourself In?
