Ok got to do a re rendering job, existing is cracked and blown but has been on for good 20 years. Don't know what the existing brickwork is like yet, but the customer says its in poor condition, she's also had problems internally with cracks appearing due to subsidence.

Customer suggested using EML.

In what circumstances would you use EML obviously for a key if required, but as far as preventing cracking? If its fixed to the brickwork surely its only as good as the background its fixed to?

Would mesh in the scratch do the same?

Thanks

It could still crack if there's that much movement, could be a good one for insulated render

on the insurance if theres movement we use resin and heli bars. to bridge gaps or cracks where there is no movement we use eml

Ok so if there are any major cracks stitch them with heli bars, then render as normal bed mesh in scratch? Use eml if key required?

Thanks for that Beddy.

Spunky yea I agree, i'm going to sign up to the SAS course and learn how to do it...until then old ways.

Have you ever tried hacking off render that has been done with eml? An old spread told me once you can learn a lot about plastering just by hacking off render.

I haven't i'd guess its a nightmare to remove though!? Is it necessary though won't rendaid do the same.

It is a right mare to get off the only reason we were hacking it off was the eml was just galv and had failed and rusted, I'm not to sure on rendaid? aint that a weber product? I have always used sbr as a slurry.

Yep weber rendaid or could give it a sbr slurry coat leave it overnight, would eml provide a stronger key? do you think, i don't want to cut corners but that stainless eml is expensive.

wuddnt worry bout the eml cost it isnt goin to cost you anything, just give them the options and let them know bout the key and the reasons you use ss eml rather than the cheaper galv eml

FreeD for what extra time it takes and what little it costs I'd put building paper behind the EML as well.

Have you considered using something like parex tv10 mesh? It's a heavy render version of the finer type mesh you'll be bedding into your basecoats on the ewi course at sas. Once you get into the newer stuff you won't be asking about eml again:)

Thanks Andy, what is advantage of using building paper? thanks

I've no idea I took Spunkys advice and just made it up.

Being serious using building paper will help prevent any cracks in the substrate coming through, gives an even background to work on and can prevent any contaminates coming through.

Aaaaah that's to take the emphasis away from the point I'm making so everyone forgets what I said but it sounds good lol
