Expansion Joint

Evening all,

I'm part-way through boarding out a 3-bed new build, and the customer is a stickler for rules and regs. One of the ceilings is approx 12m x 4m, and he has asked if an expansion joint is necessary on the 12m run.

Does anyone know what the maximum size if before an expansion join is recommended? I know you can get beads that are similar to a stop bead, which are used for expansion joints, but I've never had cause to use them before.

Also, if anyone is local to the job (Broadbottom, near Hyde, Cheshire, SK14) and fancies a days work (he pays £120 cash) giving me a lift with this ceiling and another of approx 35-40m2, send me a PM. I don't have a labourer so a rolling gauge would be tricky!

Cheers

you do get them on internals mate but ive never seen one in a ceiling

I banged a 7m square on over a year ago.. still fine.. helluva set though..
rolling guage is ok on your own, just dont mix massive bucket loads its all about keeping on the trowel at a steady pace as opposed to getting it on, flat,1st trowel - wait for it, 2nd trowel - wait for it, final..
rolling guage should just keep you lightly sweating for as long as the set takes..

(i did use another lad for my 49 square though) 4 1/2 bags 1st coat 2 people..
2 1/2 topping..
laid the topping on at 90 degrees to the 1st coat..
swapped sides with my mate for trowel up..

never seen a expansion joint on a ceiling,. suppose you could put a skim stop bead along the ceiling line 3 or 4 mill gap from the wall, better than seeing it in the middle of ceiling......... just an idea ???

Needs to break up the panel so if its 100m long then every 10 m for example, down an edge is no good

You wont need an expansion joint on that, the only time ive seen movement joints internally is when it carries through the brick work from the outside, back to back stop beads or a movement bead, not on a 48m ceiling you'll be fine. ,

Thanks for all the advice lads, much appreciated. Think I'll tell the customer that it shouldn't need one, but if he insists I'll put one in.
