how do you guys go about extras i.e .... price the job turn up on the day and they have a few extra socket holes or chases that need doing ? or the odd small area that needs a bita skim?

see i think I'm a sucker but iv been doing all this with out charging as i feel like a c**t if i do try and add £20-£30 to the job just to keep um happy, but I'm finding on every job now that there are extra bits they fort i will do anyway,

is it best to keep um happy and do the small extras or sometimes a few hours extra! or piss um off and charge them?

if its next to nothing I grin and bear it if its substantial they get a tell call and we agree or not and the job turns into a nightmare

Same as above if its tiny I just do it. If its substantial then just remind them that if they were at Tesco checkout and the woman said that'll be £74.50 and then you decided you needed a case of beer, would you expect the beer in with the £74.50 or would you expect to be charged for it.

I try and make sure we both agree whats needs to be done at the agreed price, but I'm with murplastering, if it's a small extra i just do it but if its a lot more I will explain that the cost will increase and charge £35/ph extra.
Then they can take it or leave it.

the only easy way to deal with this is to make an ADDITIONAL WORK AUTHORISATION form out, write down the extras put a price on and give it to them to sign, obviously it has wording on it to tell them whats what but its a good way charge the twa ts

Its quite funny you see post on here and think yeah the same thing is happening to me :( we did a job about 3 weeks ago it was a reskim of a front room and when it came to the rad i wasnt prepared to take it off, as we all know the problems with rads :-\ anyway i spoke to the builder and he told me that he havent priced to take the rad off, so just worked around it. After having it out with him we did it anyway, he phoned me yesterday and said that the painter is moaning that we didnt do behind the rad and for some reason he cant remember telling me to go around it and we need to go back and sort it for free after already we have done aload of extras there already, after I had a bit of strop he then started telling me how he had thrown 3 grands worth of work my way and cant i just sort it out for him so i thought about it and just said i will sort it....luckily he phoned me today and said he has done it him self ??? but the nerve of some people just winds you up >:(

Hello Mate
Have been caught out myself when I first started, clients saying Oh you said you were doing this bit here when it was never part of the quote, its amazing how some people will try it on anyway only do written quotes now with everything itemised and any thing extra will be charged for

You must write all the details down when looking at the job, it's no use trying to remember it all when you get home and you must give a detailed written quote to the client then there's no room for arguments/misunderstandings.

as andy ....... write everything down, send them a written quote and print a copy for your self include a materials list.

I also take pics if it's lookin like it's gonna be a bit awkward, so they have a point of reference etc, every one now has a camera on their mobile it's a great tool when quoting and settling disputes

PS I WILL NOT DELETE OR LOCK A TOPIC IF I DON'T LIKE IT , ONLY IF I THINK THERE IS BLATANT ADVERTISING (as in a previous thread) AND OR OTHER BREACHES OF THE FORUM RULES

Itemise everything... keep a record... and photographs... when im on sites we get extras for dubbing out, patching etc but i will only do this after site forman has given me a signed authorisation for the work at an agreed rate.

I dont know how many of you lads have been at the top end of this crap but i know a couple of lads on this site who are big enough to know what i mean, i dont do this any more but have sat in meetings where signed of extras have been dismissed by the main contractors surveyor and they have refused to pay , end of.A recent job me and my boys finished the contractor we worked for got knocked for £22,000 of signed of extras.
Lucius

why didnt you get the payments if it was signed off?....did they put some daywork against you e.g cleaning floors etc or did they just refuse to pay ???

Thats the way things are Spunky if they dont want to pay they wont, its not the first time this has happened between these two companies but the lesser one who is subbing gets the promise of the next job. The last three jobs have run at a loss for both companies but both are still trading, beats me.

shite mate ...........the we wont pay you but well rob you off on youre next job bit ........wont go bankrupt on you we promise.............by the way were tendering for ...........blah blah ..................have you said to them wheres my money you owe me ?........why didnt they pay mate there must be a reason

I werent at these meetings Spunky as i said earlier my days at these levels are long gone ime semi retired and just doing a bit of graft with my boys, weve been paid but it turns out that the company we worked for took on the contract on No Risks but were then asked to do extras and dont worry about the no risk clause and then basicly got mugged off.
Lucius

things are tight lucious and contractors wont pay but we still keep working for the c.u.n.t.s. ........plasterings a mugs game

Its a difficult one this......Id like to say...(french word) em if they wont pay i wont do it for free andlose the work. But i have done those little freebies in the past and most probably would do same again.
Although for me a lot depends on the attitude of the customer in these situations and there looks if (female) !!!Domestic work is so different, you got to try and please your customer and hope for repeat work .
Youd kick yourself later down the line if you walked from a £450 reskim job over a poxy £30 extra to backout around a few electric sockets and wall chases for exmple especially if you had nothin to go to for those few days.
I bet ive lost over £1000 this year to freebies, but one happy customer passes you on to a freind and you got that grand back in your pocket where it belongs.
A month ago i priced to skim a small bedroom 3 walls and ceiling. The ceiling was cottage style and run down 18 inches to a picture rail all the way around the room.
i need to patch up a small area around a new plug that had been installed and skim the rest.
my thinking was patch with bonding socket put beads on with remaining gear then hit the ceiling down to the picturerails and reveals.Leaving a set to do the 3 walls.
He agreed he would clear the room and rermove the radiator for me to save on the cost.
I quoted him £250 inc materials to do the job.
I turn up at the job 3-4 days later the guy has ripped the picture rail off all the way around the room and cuased the backing plaster to come off in many places including on the 1 wall we agrred not to plaster as it was in ok condition. He had not removed any of the furniture and about 40 large packs of toilet rolls where now stored against another wall .
I told him this is not what we agreed and it will cost £100 more he started spluring out in I****n to his wife in dismay and obviously was not happy.
I asked him what do you do for a living....he replied i work for a publisher i collect and deliver brochures,i said to him ....look if your boss asked you to work for 3 hrs more delivering brochures using your own car and petrol and you wont get paid for it becuse he aint got no more money what would your reply be to him???
I explained that he has cussed me 3 hrs more work by ripping the picture rail off and not removing the furniture and that now i have to skim all 4 walls + the small mater of £30 more in materials and this was not agreed.
His reply was you priced to plaster the room.
I just walked out of the house before i decked him.
The cheeky b*****d even rang me up 3 or days later and said he would pay me £300 and meet me halfway with the price.
The answer was not polite.

Its hard mate, but sometimes you gotta be like this.
But on many many many occaisions ive just done the job like you.
Some customers are greatfull for the extra work and effort but most are glad they just fu c k ed you over !!!
