Is it just me or is working out side becoming more hassle than it's work, crap scaffold ,crap weather, getting gear up down, power, crap prices, give me float set or skimming any day of the week

Its all in a days work mate.

Just think roofers have to put up with it all the time................:RpS_thumbup:

Couldn't agree more flex, I love rendering when the access, material, money is good. But lately sites have missed out on all three. I'd be happy if I didn't render til spring

The weather my friend ,we all have to deal with , the price is up to you , best of luck and chin up :RpS_thumbup:

all part of the game isn't it.
you cant moan about weather either , after the best summer in living memory.

Very true about weather we all got put up with it,as for prices if I had plenty of dough I tell them to stick it lol,but got pay the bills, just think it's easier to earn inside,

always seem to start getting more outside work this time of year and stuck inside in the summer

Same here, couple of render jobs come in this week. Can't do them for a while (domestic hack offs) will have to wait til the weather gets really shiite

Couple of outsides to finish off and then they can all fkoff 'til Easter as far as I'm concerned :RpS_thumbdn:

Scaffold is a major problem.

Every bad scaff means you lose money and time and sometimes even compromose the job.

Good scaff is not impossible its just very very rare. They either dont give a flying f or they dont understand. And what I cant get is all the scaff gaffers own top top cars. ...they must be raking it in

They must make a fortune. After the initial layout for the scaffold all they have to pay is wages, yard and vans.

nah most scaffold firms I deal with are just keeping there head above water really, liability and employers insurance is a fortune as well as all the usual overheads, as well as loads of competition. I do my own on the domestic side, no hastle then.

I think all scaffolders must be five foot five, can't remember last time I could stand up properly between lifts with hard hat on,most scaffold set out for brickies not spreads

H and S rattle on all the while and they have regs for scaff but when thw lifts are bad and you have to stoop about carrying 25, 30 kg materials or evwn heavier buckets they have nevwr addressed.

You do much morw damage to tour back working on scaff all yoir life than manual handling on thw ground every day.

Could be worse,,, you could be plastering. blindfolded ..:RpS_wink:

Won't catch me rendering, inside with a brew all day long nice ' snug! Although I have done roofing and I have fallen from scaffold :RpS_scared:

I have fell off scaffolding. 2.5m onto rocks. Thought in the ambulance thats it the lights are going out and you realise just how much you love your mom, dad and the wife! Never want to go back there again I can tell you.

Outside work? crap. but that is how I have set up my business. Rather work outside though than plaster all day. Plastering is 8 hrs of aerobics and at the end of the day you are looked down on by others.

That plaster will still be there on the walls when you are pushing up daisy's and no one will give a monkeys. Hard graft for little reward and it makes you an old man before your time!

Still it is a skill to be proud of and we should be proud of ourselves.

God bless spreads!

Similar,
wild horses wouldn't drag me back on the insides again, even in winter.
Make your money march until December then you don't need to graft in jan and February.

Yes, that is my goal at the beginning of every year. Save up enough dough in 9 months to pay off the Council tax, water rates in full come the bill in April and have enough saved to cover the utilities and Morrisons weekly shop bill for the coming winter.

Come Jan and Feb I can then afford (hopefully) to relax. Didn,t manage it last year with all the rain. Lived on stews and porridge all winter. My weekly food bill for me had to be no more than £30 a week and £5 spending money. Don't get me wrong I have savings and rental income but I live on what I earn rendering the rest is for retirement investment.

It has often been said I will not part with the snot off the end of my nose. :RpS_biggrin:

rigsby can you do inside work?

I never retire , I had enough feckin time off the last 4/5 years, looking at the four walls most days ,scratching around to make afew quid, being offer shite work at shite rates becoz the people know the position yer in ,does yer head in . started to stay in bed all day becoz yer p%^$& off with yerself and every one else, and I have hobbies like fishing and my young lads football team , but you still need to get out there and do something, so hpefuly see all you Happy B%^^&$£% in weeks to come !HA!HA! told yer it does yer head in !

I've plastered in side for nigh on 30 years . The last 3 years we've been rendering with a machine which takes all the hard work out of the game . I wouldn't want to go back inside banging on skimming for a poor wage at the end of the week . Yes we do get rainy days but the money's better and the works easier for us old gits . Roll on sunny days

True mate , but don,t tell everyone ,lets keep it to ourselves :RpS_wink:

No Spunky gave up plastering in 1989. The builders and fellow plasterers did my head in so I gave it up up to keep my sanity sort of. I don't miss it 1 bit! 8 hours of graft but I am talking of mixing 50kg of browning (hardwall) in a tin bath with a shovel and mixing skimming with a podge. Dot and dab was just coming in back then. Electric whisks didn't exist.

Loved the end product but thought the method of application was way out of date and besides it was the fact of it being such a skill but I did not get the recognition I deserved.

Now if the Ritmo was around back then it would have been perhaps another story.

Outside work is call at shop and buy 2 litres of milk, have a cup of tea, set up, have a cup of tea, do for an hour or two then another cup of tea then clean up and repeat again after dinner. Heavier gear but not 8 hours of slog at wage only rates. Saying that plastering was usually for builders and when I went rendering it is for private customers only. Rarely builders, don't trust them tight gits!

Need to brush the teeth more often to get rid of the tea stains.
