Hi all, I'm relatively new to plastering (6 months) and decided to take on my first homer tonight. The job was for.my mum so there was no serious pressure and the main reason I took it on was to gain experience and just for a bit of a laugh really. Im posting on here to get some general feed back as there was a few things I was uncertain about and although I feel as if I made a good start to the job I'm just not sure if it was done correctly.

First of all I stripped back some old plaster/browning back tongue brick work as most of it had crumbled away. I also did the same with some old lath plaster. I then used sbr all around the areas that were dry. I left it for about half an hour and then I bonded out the areas that needed repaired. Where the brick work was I was slightly nervous about the depth so I filled it out slightly and then keyed it as if i was first coating sand and cement. My plan is to go back tomorrow give it a quick coat of sbr and then finish off the bonding and then skim over it using 2 coats. There was also some damage to the angle on one of the reveals around the window so I tried My best to form an angle using my trowel as a straight edge and my margin trowel to fill and smooth the angle. Im just looking for some general feed back and tips for the future.

Fair play mate your having a go that's what matters.

Just pva the hell out of that bonding before you skim it otherwise you will be sweating!

And for forming a hard edge try tacking a bit of 3x1 to the opposite side of the reveal so you got something to go into, then when its dry take it off and bead the corner.

We all start somewhere mate, my first bit of skimming was my mums house. Just don't get to cocky and think your the best plasterer, learn from your mistakes and you will be fine!

Hello listen fair play to you that's an honest post and that's what the forum should be for people to get advice you will get a few smug comments no doubt from people who will make out they are the best ect but I can always remember my first job and it was daunting as the previous comment say get a thin coat bead on the corner and skim the whole lot and see how you get on don't rush it just do 1 wall at a time hope all goes well for you

Welcome along mate, nice start there. Keep up the good work.
Remember my 1st job on my own. Small ceiling, distemper. Didn't realise until it was all peeling off around me. Nearly cried!!! Completely inexperienced, didn't have a clue about it!!

Welcome along and good first post,I would do the whole lot as previously stated,I would do one wall at a time, take your time and every wall will come a little easyer than the previous one.if there are any beads or deeper areas fill them out at the start of the guage then first coat the whole wall with the same mix,you will find it easyer this way to start with some spreads will always fill out their beads and scrim,i do it as I get to them and I only fill scrim out if I'm plastering against it but again I do it as I get to it.keep posting bud (y)

Welcome mate, top tip is to call it a foreigner not a homer. Homer sounds a bit G** and with the hat ur going down the wrong road.

Keep up the practice though, confidence will come with time.
