I am stressed out of my eyeballs, not sleeping etc etc etc, I have so much work on and have to sub it out but EVERYONE seems to be complete and utter shite. Isn it sad that I cant find one...yes one decent subbie who I can leave on a job without them completely making a shambles of it. I have had one bloke who left someones house covered in skim, poured out his dirty buckets in the street and did a s**t job, another two on a rendering job who when I did a site visit today looked like tweedle dee and tweedle f**k**g dumb with all the windows and soffits covered in f**k**g gone off compo another guy who when I paid a visit today his walls looked like he laid them on with a shovel etc etc etc.
I have good big jobs on but just cant seem to find the guys to do the work, with all this s**t work going on is my reputation going down the toilet.

I feel like closing up shop.... im gutted and sad that this seems to be the general standard of work.

Tomorrow I am gonna chuck the lot off site and I am preparing myself to loose the plot and give a few a slap.

Sack the f**k**g lot of um >:( Thats half the battle finding decent subbies or reliable ones trouble is the good uns know there good and always drop u at 50p m2 more down the road.

I feel exactly the same rich, not that I subbie me work out when Ive got alot on, theres three of us in my firm and I ll put the extra hours in to move onto the next job, but I know for a fact that I could nt rely on most of the plasterers round my end due to the shoddy workmanship thats around. I must of put around 10 jobs right since the start of the year. At the end of the day its wether you wanna put your hard earned reputation at risk and I for 1 wont be.

downsize and train your own men up it takes time buut in my experiance the only way to make sure the work is up to the standard you set

Welcome to the world of contracting Richard, there are loads of spreads that talk a good job, but far far fewer that can deliever. I wouldn't dream of taking someone on and letting them loose on a private job it's bad enough on site, but at least you get more chance to correct cockups on site without loosing your reputation.
As for training your own staff I've tried that as well and in my experience once you have taught them what they think they need to know then their of as soon as there is enough work about to go it alone, I think the main reason for this is that if you employ them legally (on the cards) there are more costs for you to allow for so then you can't put as much money their way as they can earn on their own (in the good times). Everyone I've spoken to (except Simply) over recent years has said the same, when you could have people working for you as "self employed" it wasn't as bad, since the employment rules were enforced it's hardly worth taking lads on and training them.

Keep the faith RB , i hope things work out for you mate ;), funnily enough I'm finishing a house for a builder at the moment were the plasterer got chucked off , i think theres a lot of it about , its easy to say your a plasterer but doing it well is another thing, anyway i feel a rant coming on so i will stop there . Best of luck Rich .

I know exactly what you're saying, I've had my fair share of muppets, don't come up to expectation! I would love to have someone to work with but most just take the piss or just don't give a stuff! Not on my reputation you don't! I rely on myself.

heres my tuppence worth on this subjecti have been there and got the t shirt i promise.

luckily in plastering you can pretty much tell how good they are within about a minuite well 99% of the time so there is no need to have duffers for more than 5 mins tell them to do one it is hard but this is seriouse.

in my oppinion the only way to get decent people is to pay for it(im not saying your not) but that means you have to price right to afford the wages true pros need.and its not 120 a day its on price and its better that you make less but get paid and get work completed

i always worked with new guys gangs before i left them to it its the only way that way your not replacing windows or re spraying cars or whatever it is these numptys eff up.

all the best

I pay £125 day work. £ 3.00 - £3-50 skimming and £8.00- £10.00 rendering.

When you have them on day work are they on the cards or self employed Rich? Be careful.

its funny cause i do the same quality of work inside /outside floors etc for what ever the money is, i think it boils down to if you do the job properly or not the amount of work might change a little but if you can do the job the monkeys and peanuts thing should not apply Ive been charging £150 /200 a day for years and that goes for builders ,Joe public and plastering contractors a like there maybe times were i have worked for less but that's because Ive needed the work ,also i like to go home at 4 regardless of what i do , and Ive never been chucked off a site or moaned at for what i have done reputation is everything whether its yours or someone elses. end of

Absolutely spot on, my old man said you do the job right no matter what, if you don't like the price you walk away.

my quality will get slightly better when im on day work just because i dont push as hard for the extra mtrs,my work is never pulled when on price but it does get better when i only got 3 walls on instead of 4

agree with church and rich you pay good hard earnt dough mate i was nt having a go i hear you mate i do i dont know what to say 99%of spreads now work in a way ive never seen for instance i was always taught to clean up first inc a nice soft sweeping brush around but i see lads clambouring over stuff that would take 5 10 mins to move but they sruggle to the rooms done i dont get it

I checked on a spread today.... he has used the same water bucked for 4 days, the bucket held about an inch of water cause the rest was filled with s**t and he cleans his tools with a hammer and a scraper rather then clean as he goes.... I just dont get it. I lay up then im cleaning ..... not leaving all my tools covered in s**t etc. wtf

No, I've seen them crapin a box of nails and piss in carrier bags deposited under the floor boards! O and never drink from lucozade bottles left on site!!!!! ;)

Mur have you worked on the same job as Spunky, don't know what made me think of that ::)

The tall mixing bucket with bin liner inside
is a great toilet;)
just skip the bag when done.
An air freshner is recommended or a can of lynx will
do.

A painter mate of mine said he used to s h i t in paint tins then skip em, because the site bog was 5 mins walk.
one day he saw a paddy groundworker taking one of the tins out the skip on his way home
wonder what his missus thought of the colour & smell!

A young painter thought it was funny to crap in a new paint kettle once on site, and leave it by the front door. Imagine his face when he opened his snack box at afternoon tea time to find his turd rubbing up against his yet to be eaten Kit Kat.
