S a plastering

Private Member
Used em today over a dodgy reskim for the first time what a mare dont know if i was doin it wrong but they just kept clummping around the paddle they didn't seem to want to disperse

just chuck em in the water and give a good blitz with the mixer on medium speed to disperse them then straight in with the powder. If you hang about they will all float back to the top and clump together pretty quick. They do disperse aagin though when you start mixing the powder in. Did you see them in your mix when you put it on the wall? If not then they are evenly mixed in and you have nothing to worry about. Great things those fibres on dodgy reskims

I use them on all my re skims now. The ones i've got you have to mix for 30 seconds with the water so they disperse before add the plaster. Make sure you put the right amount in also...I reduce them apprx 50% in top coat...as I've had trouble finishing before (tearing). What size you using? I use 2.2mm.

I don't use these in skim but have been using them in my render for close on twenty years I reckon. There are a few different ones on the market and they don't all act the same. I use the coarse ones in screeds and scratch coats and the fine ones (finer than a human hair) in the top coat and find that putting them in the water and giving a little stir and then leaving for a while prior to mixing allows the water to get in between the individual fibres and reduces clumping.

I only put them in the first coat of skim if i do use them otherwise the finish can get a bit furry

Yeah I only put em in first coat of skim on bad reskims.
Otherwise you'll see the fine fibres sticking out the finished walls.

Sometimes they are clumped together in the bag so best to break em up as you add them to the water, then as said above give a mix up before you add the plaster.

Still tape any cracks aswell.

so why tape the cracks if they work and what about the old background getting new cracks

Why not tape the cracks doesn't hurt does it.
And can't do much about movement in the building afterwards.
Everyone has got their own way ain't they, they can skim straight over the cracks for all I care.

very true fcuk the cracks and i dont do domestic so why am i posting i hate plastering

hey madmonk, wait for it to dry(think 2hrs) then as nisus said apply your pva or agent. i've just reskimmed a house with the old lime walls. stabiliser, when it was dry taped up all the cracks,1 coat of pva 3-1. i used the wickes stabiliser, it owns them horrible high suction lime walls.
