i have a fire place to hardwall and skim it has been bricked up allready . when i hardwall the fireplace do i come flush with surrounding wall then skim the opening or should i keep the hardwall back about eighth of inch

depends if your just doing a patch most people would keep it back a few fill then patch to the edges.

my self i always bond flush and fade my patching in but the best thing to do is bead up and skim the breast that way you no it looks good

personally i prefer to hardwall it flush. then scrape back and cut the edges back. doesnt matter either way aslong as you can't see where its been patched after its painted.

whenever I'm patching I always bring it out at least a foot and a half from the edge.
