Fixing plasterboard to existing dot and dab wall using screws

Hi very stupidly moved into our new (Mt Wimpey) house and wallpapered a 5m wall in our lounge... 5 years on and the wallpaper doesn't want to come off without screwing up the existing plasterboard.

So my "plan" would be to dry-line over the existing wall by staggering and gluing/screwing new boards over the top of the existing, and making sure to use long enough screws that go into the thermal block wall behind.


Will this work and if not what are the alternative short of stripping the wall back to the brick?

Not much else to do , it happens when the boards havnt been skimmed and ur scraper cuts into the board , dot and dab will only be fixed to your wall paper which will compromise your new boards hope this helps

Ok, so its ok to screw/glue to existing plasterboard? Would only be 9.5mm

Not really on to blockwork on a stud yes , unless u wanna rawlplug for every screw , ad much ratha pull it off fair enough abit mess, not any where near as much as a floated wall

Don't dab the boards because the wallpaper will probably peel off when exposed to the water in the adhesive. Instead, drill holes and use hammer fixings

Batton the wall , You could mark out on the wall were u want battons every 30 or 40 cm and just cut channels in the excisting board the width of ur new battons were ever they need to be, then fix the timber battons to the exposed brick wall behind, just make sure your timber is thick enough to sit past excisting boards, Saves ripping the hole lot off.did this for a friend a while ok worked a treat.

just make sure if you glue and screw your not going to go through existing pipes &cables.

This is why dry lining and ames taping is crap. A skim coat of plaster when built eradicates this problem.

You can use a good grab adhesive and hammer fixings through the dabs you can try screwing into the dabs and see how you get on

best to strip it or rip it off, too scary re wires and plumbing behind as said above

Give it a coat of skim i guarantee all the paper will come off

Why would he skim wallpaper we've just been arguing the toss over reboarding a ceiling with a few cracks in it?

Exactly just put a heavy grade lining paper on ! remember to hang it horizontally not vertically and bobs your uncle drama over !!:RpS_thumbup:

I think you are just not trying hard enough to get the paper off. just keep wetting the wall using warm water with a little bit of washing up liquid in it..Repeat until the wall paper is soft enoughto peel/scrape off. Then leave the wall to dry out . IF the surface is damaged during this process then apply a tight coat of bonding and scrim any holes .Leave the bonding to dry then PVA and skim.
