I am working on a house renovation at the moment and the gable end wall has some cracks in the render, not big cracks but small narrow ones. The render is well bonded and will be tough work to hack it off which is what I intended to do. Is there another option? Is there something I can paint or plaster over the existing surface to make it sound?

Thin coat system if your familiar with them. If not call a manufacturer/supplier - Wetherby/Parex etc and get them to come out and spec it for you.

Hack off loose back to sound then there are options. Thin coat, sbr and conventional, plastprime x etc. Sort the cracks out first though or they will mirror through.

Done a big gable start of this year that had only been rendered 5 years a go , just over a hundred metres on it , last people had done in 2 halfa no water proofer in bottom half , just do it properly and hack it off a no its a ballache but best job and u can see if there is anything happening behind the cracks etc , thin coat over the top but u cant garentee the existing wont drop off in a few years month etc

Scrim and pin with the thin coat. Then the system is held to the structure rather than the existing render. That's what i'd do anyway.

last gable we hacked off took most of the brick faces off and it was a nightmare, but there is no easy solution..............is there??

Maybe just expand met the whole gable and scratch and float ,either way ,lot of work

If it's the gable you could pin a 30mm polystyrene then thin coat system you will get good u values at the same time just a thought insulation not that dear either

An if your going down that route you may as well so it right to achieve the recommended min u values and possibly get some eco funding for it

Thanks all. It's going to be the old rip it out and start again!
