One of my favorite trowels has gone out of shape, its a mt ss 14inch floating trowel its about 10years old and i haven't used it much for about 3 months for one reason or another but one side of the blade has lifted gone tottally wrong any ideas how to sort it , Ive tried bending it with heat and pressure but to know use ....so I'm a bit stumped ??? i really don't what to throw it away.

Don't throw it away I've always found those 14in trowels perfect for scraping out skimming buckets ;)

if you can get 2 peices of steel that are flat heat the trowel then place between the 2 steels and clamp up in a vice i dont know if this will work but its fu(ked anyway so worth a shot

I really don't use 14s that much anymore mate but i have to try to save it , its like an old friend

might be worth a go that thanks nap

i reckon if youve already put some heat into it it may be irretrievable..
we used to put heat into universal beams when all the gussets were welded onto one side..
the idea being that if you put heat into the other side it equals the tension... these were big steel beams though 10mm web sort of thing..
stainless 22's guage however... different animal...
it didnt get heat into it to get that shape so i'd recommend you try and do the opposite of what happened in the first place... my tyzack bent the other way the other week, i assume ive caught it funny in the bucket and thrown the chopsaw on top or something..
anyway, i just put the corner on the ground and leant on it a few times till it came back...
you could do the same thing but if it doesnt work i'd say its shafted mate...
putting heat into something that thin will prolly f'ck up any tempering thats in it...

them tyzack blades lift a lot ive had 2 an gone the wrong way thats just the new ones though think the older ones better quality

thanks Chris i will try to sort it but its not looking good mate , monk are you using the ready to go tyzacks ?

ive got both mate rtg an the premier but dont seem to have much look with em i love usingem aswell cos they are lovely an light to use an flexible im back usin my old mt but feels a bit clumbsy

They do seem a bit hit and miss mate thb , but ive had no probs with the premier range (carbon )

ive got to say guys i used to use mt trowel but tryed these ready to go tyzack ,steel is lovely and soft i would say the 13 inch is the best but they do go out of shape very quickly and if they do they only 25 quid and there worn in after a few days

i didnt like my ready to use when i first got it took a while using it on the hardwall before it was anygood for finish i prefer it to the MT now but i am on the second one the back rivet popped on the first one

I've had a couple of the 11in ready to go tyzaks they're nice to use but went out of shape to quickly for my liking, I'm currently useing the MT permashape in 11 1/2 in, not quite as nice to use as the tyzak but shape stays spot on.

essex do you use that size for skimming are they ok for covering area

Yeah I use 11 or now the 11 1/2in trowels for everthing except scraping the bucket out. I was brought up using girlie trowels but being the sort that likes to try different tools and methods I gave larger trowels a go, I never found them any quicker and after about six month's I started to start getting pains in my wrist and elbow, being a bit slow I didn't blame the trowels straight away, but after a while I thought I'd go back to the girlie trowels again and in no time at all the pains stopped.
The reason I don't think the larger trowels are any quicker is because they slow your speed of hand quite noticeably. As for the aches and pains, well think of your trowel like a snow shoe, the larger the area the more pressure needed to apply the same force per square inch beneath it so when pushing render onto the wall or having to put pressure onto finish plaster you have got to push harder. I've lent one of my girlie trowels to a couple of other spreads who were also suffering aches and pains and had never used small trowels they both said they could fell an immediate improvement.

The same can be said for hawks/ handboards , i did have a 14x14 mt used it for a couple of weeks and bined it after getting pain in my wrist. As for trowel size , Andy has it spot on the bigger the trowel the worse it is on your wrist elbow and shoulder they are no quicker or easyier to use and makes no difference to the finishned product.

you can sort it by putting a small block of wood either end of the trowel (underneath it so it's sitting on top of the blocks (make sure blocks are wider thn the trowel)) and then gently tapping the bar that runs through the middle gently with a hammer , but not to hard as you'll snap it , done this a few times and normally sorts the problem

Thanks mate i will try that

a bigger trowel dont make it a lot faster but you get a flatter surfice. please dont say you use an 11" for floors. if you find it hard on your wrist then if you have a big area use a spat to do the first flatten, its nice and quick and you get lovely flat area for the second trowel. there aint a lot of pressure on your arms. I only use it for the laying on and first trowel. i wouldnt use an 18 for the second or third.

blar blar, come mr grand, you slatted me about using a spat and said you use an 18 so come on stop trying to get in churchs pants

Do you wear a copper braclet ? if not give one a go ,i know a lot of people think there bollox but they work for me there only about £10 if it dont work bin it.

i dont use an 18 never have i did use a 16 for years and am now down to 14 x 4 and spats are shizer i just use the trowel i got

church can you chuck it on ebay? never seen a skimming trowel on there you might get 100 quid ::)
