Looking at the possibility of installing a gypframe suspended ceiling in a 15 x 5 meter domestic lounge.

The current ceiling is shot, lined with wall paper, up-down-and all over the place, therefore undrawing it isn't really an option.

I think i already know the answer to this one, but is it absolutely necessary to drop the old plaster off the ceiling prior to starting with the gypframe? Or can i just make holes where i need to hang hangers for the new ceiling??

Thanks

This is my point though... or rather my fear!

When you're under-drawing a ceiling you're putting a mechanical fix through the old plaster in to the joists above, thereby holding the old stuff up.

If you're putting a suspended ceiling up there will be no support to the old stuff, and at some point the older plaster will fail (may be years down the line), but it's going to land on the new suspended ceiling and potentially crack joints in the plasterboard or worse... force the ceiling to fall through.

Do you guys just run the risk?? I must admit it IS incredibly tempting to leave it up... and a hell of a lot cleaner!!

Do you also leave old plaster/wall paper on external walls when throwing up false cavities??

Thanks

the old ceiling is fixed in a number of places your only fixing the new ceiling to the joists so there isnt any problems.

Old ceiling is lathe and plaster. A bit dodgy in places. Think if I put enough fixing in to joists it will be ok. What's your opinion on putting a gypframe cavity with added insulation on external walls...? Do you leave plaster on or take it off...?

If the ceiling looks pretty sound I would leave it alone but make sure that my fixings went well into the joists (say at least an inch and half). If the ceiling looks like it would come down if you fell out of bed at night then take it down. Taking down a lath and plaster ceiling is messy work - you can seal up doors, dustsheet the whole house and still you'll have a load of hoovering and dusting to do - ask my misses she'll tell you! ::)
