When i first started all the way back in 1994, i remember my first day was knocing up artex, back in sunny essex.

Now all i have ever used is :-

Sand and cement
multi
bonding
browning
artex
lately hardwall..

Now i was bored a while back and looked on BG website, and noticed they had LOADS of products i had never heard of, or seen. I then rung the 60 year old bloke who taught me and works with me now and again, and he had never heard of them. I also asked a plasterer who fishes at my lake, and he has only ever used the same as me....

By this i mean all the differet bagged plaster you can buy. My mate said to me, its all well and good them selling these, but where do you buy it from? and we have no idea ( not that we want to use it ), cant just walk in wickes and buy it!

And i've only found out about in the last year about gypbond, and we know a mate who works for a massive plastering firm in london and he gets us the odd tub when we need it. ( and loads of stainless beads for nothing....) We have always wired flat surfaces.

I was just wondering am i miles behind the times? I mean 99% of my work is in domestic houses, plasterboarding, skimming and rendering, and screeding.

And is all the other bagged stuff very individual?

British Gypsum recent took myself and 4 others off here on a day out down teh mine and in teh factory and we got to play about with some of the news stuff...

Ask Warrior about how tough that durafinish is :-)

Hammer proof? Not quite. lol.
Oh no that wasn't the Durafinish it was their new unbreakable (cough) plasterboard.

Gypsum product should be thought out when you use them and are more placed in modern builds, when it comes to older buildings you need to go back to basics and use the old ways, ie: lime etc

durafinish yea...is it any good?or sorry should i say does it work?

Living in Huddersfield you want to take care with the old stone houses, most are lime rendered....

You may not remember the council had a big problem with houses because in the 70s/early 80s council houses were browned, kitchens and bathrooms went black with mold. For year it was a problem. Gypsum products have caused many problems over the years and I would not rely on their products discription.

Do you do much lime plastering alf ?.

Yes I do alot, I've found it a good money spinner so to speak. I'm from the old school but am versed on modern products also. Everything has it's place. Spent alot of time plastering in Europe also but most work was casting etc. I have had breaks though, owned a PC store for a few years but always went back to plastering, well never lost my hand, big family always knocking on door for freebies.

I prefer working on old property.

ive used a lot of lime too, but it only seems the Really old houses that have lime render. i've lost count of the old crappy black lime walls ive re rendered and skimmed. The people only took there wall paper off, and the wall fell off. I've also found a lot of people want a new stud wall built in front, so it can be insulated properly and then boarded and skimmed. they lose 4" of a room, but the room is warm!

Some nice houses in Hudds, very well built. I used to live in Fixby and went to Fartown school.

In fairness to the lad he doesn't actually work for BG just freelance for the spraying demo's, and he probs over emphasised the strength of this board, it probs only took three firemen and after a shift skimming an house

The ceiling he showed us, the new board was fixed to ply & its like a cement board.
He mentioned it's use in mental hospitals to stop them breaking through ceilings/Walls to escape or cause damage.

they wanna stick them in youth hostells aswell bloody ***** ruined soo much hard work of mine they had only been in there a month or so

ive only done one for lengard in southwark south london looking over camberwell park hated it haha everything that was moved or ripped out heroin needles were found a whole bucket full of em, labourers had to wear super thick gloves to pick em up.
i did get paid to redo it but just a pain in the arse once its a fully functioning building people in and out, did my head in.

"Swung his hammer", he took a bloody run at it. I honestly thought he was going to go in one side and come out the other, very funny.
