went to view a job tonight. it was a hall stairs and landing. it had been taken back to brick, boarded, and skimmed. finish was rough. but the bloke wasnt concerned about that he thought it was good :rolleyes) he was more concerned about the hairline cracks that appeared all over the place. probably on about two thirds of the whole thing. all of them following the line of the board. it was like a big tapestry. with that many cracks what do you reckon? he hadnt taped :RpS_crying: surely not. you wouldnt knock off a whole hall stairs and landing, board, but then not tape ... :RpS_unsure: also in the hall you could see hed used paper joint tape on one wall - and there were no cracks on that one ... :RpS_sneaky: i scraped back along two of the cracks upstairs and there was scrim there. board was damp when put on :RpS_unsure: he said it was last summer but it might have rained ... :RpS_confused:

Could be not enough dab down the joint of the board, was there any give?i worked on a job once and saw some other spreads boarding and they were using minimal adhesive to stick the boards and almost none near to the edge of the board(the pair of them didn't last long) and neither did the boarding as soon as someone leaned on it a hairline appeared on the joint.

3 sins I guess???

movement? if not enough addy down edges?
suction? should be ok as plasterboard?
tempreture? excessive heat when drying?

....2 othe sugestions bid gaps between the boards?

final suggestion probabley 1 coated as plasterboard which may be the issue particulary if not a heavy coat...

though for what its worth I bed down my joints and then 1 coat 90% of boardwork if decent:RpS_blushing:

no it was fine. no give in it. all solid. wasnt too thin a coat as you couldnt see any scrim through it .... wasnt one coat by the look of the finish. can only think the board was damp. wonder why he started with paper tape on wall and then ****** it off and scrimmed the rest.

As @ kgreigh said they probably not run a hard line of dots down edge or maybe if brick was full of dust and they haven't brushed the walls down and a light coat of pva! Ive seen board drop off once set as it just sits on top of dust and slightest knock there off!! Schoolboy error for the inexperienced :RpS_thumbsup:

If the board was damp and it was in the height of summer could of set to quick on the surface and slower from the back causing it to shrink or sommat:RpS_confused:

feck pva ing a wall that im going to dot unless a firplace/chimney sut etc....I can barley bring myself to prime a wall before skimming these days!!!

Bad, ie cut edges of boards butted up together can sometimes cause this. Or a boisterous dog, eg labrador bouncing off the boards during addy setting possibly ?

thanks guys. agree with all the above. just seems odd that its nearly the whole hall stairs and landing and nearly every board and piece cracked. wondering if it dried out while he was there and thats why he put that paper tape downstairs but then thought fcuk it and left and just didnt answer his phone after that. yeah could have been a multitude of things.

would you suggest scoring the cracks with a stanley knife and then filling them with silicone :RpS_sleep:

I know what ya saying fella i only do it if its that shitty black dust and when i say pva i mean the bare minimum more like slightly coloured water just to flatten the dust down!:RpS_thumbsup:

tbh jurek....no

I would offer to scrim of all existing cracks pva and overskim....don't see what else you can do mate?

@Jurek if it was only done in the summer have they got the plasterer who done the work to come round and have a look at it to see if he has any idea

tbh jurek....id back heal this job...call it intuition...but can you imagine how pissed they would be if you re-do it all and it cracks again!!!

just point the van in the direction to less stressfull job pal and tell em you can do the works at a fair rate but booked up for blablabla weeks usualy works for me...

uhm ... was thinking that :RpS_unsure: have booked it in for the end of april for reskim. should be okay. theres no movement in the boards. so im sure it will be fine ... :RpS_unsure: wish i was doing it now actually instead of the job im on :RpS_cursing: bloke has a garage attached to the kitchen. literally. he does up cars like wheeler dealers. youre in the kitchen and hes knocked through into the garage ffs. hell have to brick it up when he sells on. he was on the angle grinder all day it was driving me mad :RpS_cursing: i was poorly anyway, but that just got me down. was trying to listen to PM questions as well. was depressed today :-(

if its a breeze block wall if your saying its a newish house can also fir some galvanised screws in they usualy nip into breeze and catch the board bud:RpS_thumbup:

or use a ceiling down lighter cutter spray as beddy says or shove some addy in and put the cut piece of board back over...

done all of those a few times mate

When you going for a pint with him?

I have done what beddy said a couple of weeks back as the bottoms of some boards were loose in a kitchen reskim, drilled a load of holes about 12" apart and squirted a load of foam in,it worked great,I did stack some bits and bobs along the bottom of the boards to hold them in while the foam was going off.

Pva the walls and paper tape the cracks. If you dont want to do that then use 100mm wide scrim with added fibres in the first coat of skim.
