Hi Guys
I've finished rendering and skimming the bedroom walls to a fair standard using advice given on here, although must say I had to use a little filler in some areas. one wall had ripples appear, only noticeable when painted?
I have now started the upstairs hall and landing, these walls I have just skimmed over the orginal plaster after I pva'd them and added plaster fibres to the mix, hoping to prevent any cracking.

I'm waiting to do the big hall wall up along the stairway, but are never going to do this in one go. I have read on this site that you can spit the wall into two by using an edging strip.
Do I complete one half of the wall (2 coats of plaster)and leave set, remove the strip and complete the second half....
If this is the way. How will I blend in the plaster where i remove the strip and wont it be visible when dry?
and can you offer any advice on why one wall is showing ripples- I think i had trouble with this wall because i left the plaster set to long and had to work hard to get flat. would this be the reason?

your advice always appreciated
thanks
Steve

YOU NORMALLY GET RIPPLES WHEN THE PLASTER IS ON TOO THICK MATE AND DONT BOTHER WITH A STRIP AS YOU WILL TEND TO CURVE OUT TO IT WHICH WILL CAUSE A BUMP IN THE WALL, INSTEAD I NORMALLY JUST STOP WHERE EVER YOU WANT TOO AND THEN ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED JUST BWET THE WALL AT THE JOINT AND BLEND YOUR NEXT MIX OF PLASTER IN TO IT ;) SORRY FOR THE caps lock

we all get ripples now and then its down to timing you probably started troweling up too early, if you need to break up sets run an overlylong piece of scrim where you want to stop the set and after the first wet trowel take it off and tidy it up

Anyone add the fibres to their plaster mix and find then of benefit, I seen then in builder supplies and thought that fireboard got fibres in the plaster and they seem alot stronger than ordinary boards.

with all due respect lads all the above is rubbish. Rossco if u feel the area is too big for you maybe
get someone to give u a hand especially if u cant 'lose' the joint. The fibres are good but if u insist on doing a 'big'
area on ur own maybe u should think more about suction control eg wba 2 give u more time.
I know the other posters wont be happy ;)

thanks for the link to the pics Oasis.. nice job
scrim it is then.. how long can you wait before starting second section, enough time for tea and bicky break?

whenever you like really mate if its the same day just wet the edge a little before or next day give the edge a coat of 3-1 pva ......youre not really marrying it in you want to work up to the edge and cut the excess plaster off so you end up with a neat joint .........if lights shining down the wall its impossible to get it perfect even for time served lads so use some filler over the edge and sand it

to save yourself the stress just think of the joint as a board joint which is easily covered by drylining so do this after your mist coat to perfect it.
