Happy New Year All! Quick beginner question if I may...

Hi all,
Happy New Year, hope everyone had a good one!

Quick question from me if I may, I have removed Artex and plaster from hallway and will be left with this. I am completely new to this so would I be right in saying this is the bonding coat that I have left? It's relatively thick and beneath this is darker (Blockwork I'm guessing).

My question is can I plaster straight onto to this? I'm guessing if it's bonding coat I can but it is very old so perhaps a PVA coating first. I have some BG multi finish so was hoping to use that.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Don’t skimp on the prep work.
That looks extremely high suction background, not much of a job for an experienced plasterer but you’ll struggle.
If you really want to try, give it 2 weak pva and 1 stronger
Post us some pics how you got on

That's what I was thinking, just the devil float marks look more like browning than bonding plus there doesn't appear to be any vermiculite in it.
If it is browning I'd hack it off as well, that stuff is like a honeycomb anyway, I'm sure it was sold as lightweight aerated backing coat.

Yeah used loads of this s**t back in the day stunk of egg when it was drying out,it took over from sand+cement although I prefer to use s+c haven’t used hardwall enough to actually give it a rating float and set a thing of the past
