Hello everyone im new to the site and intrested in becoming a labourer or trainee.
Im 30 years old and have been serving in the armed forces for past 12 years and looking at a career change (Plastering).
Im from central Scotland.

Thanks Jamie

Welcome mate ,never to old to learn ,try ringing around all your local plastering companies ,but it is normally a bit slow this time of year ,so don,t get put of ,best of luck

Agree with Keith there Jarv, draft a nice email explaining a bit about yourself emphasizing on a willingness to learn and graft and then go through every search engine to find plasterers websites and use their email link. A lot of spreads that dont have websites will have their emails listed on other sites (yell.com, thomsons, free-index) etc. lots out there, keep trying.

Iv tried that already mate aint had any joy.
Sent my covering letter and CV to loads companies just cant find much at all.
Iv got quite an extensive resstlement package in the army that will cover alot of many training courses I may need todo.
How does these 8 week plastering courses work? If I done one of these courses through my resstlement would that help me getting a start with someone or is it a waste of money?
Im under no illusions that im going do a short course then call myself a plasterer im just intrested to know if it will help me on the ladder?

Thanks jamie

sounds like you already got that one covered Jamie, it is really tough right now. I had a lad ring me this morning in a similar situation to yourself looking for work. It can be a great trade to be in when things are going well, the problem in our area is in increase in competition. A couple of big firms went under and a lot of guys went self employed, keep persevering mate it sounds like you have the right attitude. I dont know much about plastering courses but im sure someone will be along soon that does.

Long story short; a newbie rang me about 4 years ago having just finished his college plastering course. I advised him best I could and gave him some numbers to ring. He always remembered me and now he has 3 guys working and is always busy, he passes work our way from time to time. He did well by purely networking, anyone he saw in work clothes he would strike up a conversation.

Jamie

hang around a while - or come back later this evening (it will get busier later).......... There are a few guys who use the Forum regularly who were in the same boat as you - Ex Service Guys.... I am sure they will give you some advise.

don't be downbeat - there are potentially 000's of people reading these posts and someone might be looking......

Increase your post count a bit (post some comments on other posts) then it will show that you are active on here and keen - it will also activate your private message service on the Forum..... you will then be more likely to get more direct help!!

Good Luck mate!

Alreet jamie.......welcome along marra...........who do the resettlement plastering courses these days??.........it used to be able skills and PATS in salisbury but i know they went under

there is alot of companies do it pal.
you can use the enhanced learning credits now for the courses as well.
Are they worth doing or is it a waste of time?

Thanks Jamie

Depends on the training provider....i was already plastering before i left the army on weekends and during leave and just used the course to get my NVQ 2. however i still couldnt get a start anywhere cos i didnt have time in the trade. so having quals isnt everything................i know a few people on here have done the gold trowel courses

Im not expecting to get a start as a plasterer after doing the plastering course
Would it help me get a start as labourer/trainee?
Wish I could turn back time and get a trade when I left school instead of wasting my full 20s in the army lmao
Cheers jamie
