I'm a 61 year old tradesman. Mainly electrician and plumber, with limited experience of plastering. I'm renovating an old house so I'm putting my limited experience to good use. I appreciate plastering is an art so I'm hoping to get lots of tips to avoid disasters!

Pathetic statement.
Typical jack of all trades and chancers mentality.

What about all the hard years of intense training that people have to put in to learn and hone their skills in all walks of life, is all that just a waste of time?

Do you self diagnose and medicate when you’re ill or do you go to see a doctor?

Just because you can sow a hole in your sock it don’t make you a tailor smart arse!

Of course it doesn’t.

For one, I have the upmost respect for long served trades, and have never said anything to the contrary.

However, we’re only here for a relatively short time on this planet, so for someone to turn out with an interest in a bit of plastering (or whatever) and let’s put that into context in the grand scheme (no disrespect again to any trade) isn’t it better to encourage someone to have a go. Yes, the obvious likelihood is that they will fook it up. If they don’t, and get to a point where they’re happy (in their world), then great. It will have zero bearing on the take home pay of any plasterer (or other tradesman).

If you’re good (and can maintain it), you really don’t need to look over your shoulder.
You will always work.

Ffs no decent. time served trades are looking over their shoulders.

I personally don’t like have a go heroes in the building trade, or any other walk of life. To me you’re depriving someone of their ability to earn a living.

We do all sorts of stuff now, much like Chrispy. It was never intentional (apart from the decorating), but driven by clients more or less pleading us to tackle other projects.
Currently well through a full house refurb on a job where we initially went round to look at reskimming some ceilings. Client is so happy with us that we're going to another family members to do similar after this one.
I don't feel any guilt towards other trades, but nor am I going on their forums asking basic questions.
I do ask Chrispy though.

I get that mate, but I do believe in encouraging people to have a go as long as they aren’t going to kill themselves or others. World would be boring if everyone stayed in their lane, although some should definitely do that!

If someone is genuinely interested in having a go at something else though, most will just go ahead and do it anyway, and then it’s down to their own perseverance and conscience to consider if they’re any good at it.

What I’ve personally found by chancing is that it gives you more insight into the whole process and is more beneficial when stand alone trades do come in on a job. You better understand what they require to do their job better and easier and gives you more respect (or it should) for the genuine expert.

There are unfortunately real chancers out there who only think about money and don’t care what they do to get it. They usually get found in the end.

Exactly that. I’m like a small local convenience store to my customers. I don’t offer everything, but more than enough to do the job well. If I need more help/expertise, then I’ve got a few people who I trust and can bring in.

For quite awhile, I didn’t take on any stand alone plastering jobs. It was just convenient for me to do what bit of plastering I needed on my jobs as there were no hold ups if things didn’t pan out in the schedule of say a bathroom refurb.
I generally still don’t take on much plastering work, but if it works with the diary then why not. I’m not the best, but more than good enough.

Fook the tile. I’m the main man who knows how to rock it and shock it for awhile. Remember the name DJ ChRisPY.
