Hi guys
Needing some professional help please.
Have a wall that’s had water damage but found the cause (not damp) lots of salts bleeding through plaster.
I’ve taken the walls back to brick, do I need to stabilise the brick with a salt neutraliser before re-plastering?
Also would you recommend sand and cement as a backing coat or can hardwall be used?
Thank you in advance :)

Yes

S and c really, with a salt inhibiting waterproof admix.
Many available.

Let the brick dry out and you can brush away any salts

I personally hate cement. Where is the issue? Upstairs? Downstairs? Bay? Exterior wall?

What caused the leak?

Exterior wall so I’d want a waterproof render rather than hardwall. Brushing away the salts isn’t enough to stop it bleeding through new plaster surely

Proper way is spray with this, then as I said above.

Other than that (using sand and cement), you could plaster with lime lite, safeguard, or wykamol damp resistant plasters, which stop any salt migration very well.

Limelite as long as there’s no penetrative damp, ie a leak. Cement is just awful in my opinion for most situations.

Some slurries and tanking systems work fantastic - in the correct environment.

All materials have their place.
