hi all, firstly im not a plasterer, how ever i am a electrician,

i need a question answered if possible,

my bedroom has a brushed swirl effect artex ceiling, which i dont want to take down or over skim, what i want to do is over board with a floating black board in the middle with a fibre optic star kit and led mood light surround blah blah ,

the question mainly is when i overboard do i need to put battens on the artex ceiling to support the new plaster board sheets, or is it ok to screw direct to the joists, i shall be just tape and joining with a few layers of quality paint, the existing artex is quite level and the groves are a match stick deep at worst

any advice please and thank you kindly in advance

No need to put battens on.

ok great thanks for answering that,

next question is are 12.5 mm boards my best option, i do have 3 monkeys that are willing to help hold boards up while i fix them, so ill be using maximum size sheets, and fixing distance is every 25-30 cm ok along all the joists ?

thanks again

ding the boarding yourself mate if confident of doing a good job and pay a plasterere to skim it off.

tape and jointing done by anobody other than a pro will look horrendous and even then can still look shocking under certain light conditions etc.

when i said black board kind of ment something like this

Starcoustixâ„¢ Fiber-Optic Ceilings

not really sure of what material it will be yet, was thinking plaster board again thickest or strongest i can source, fixed on 4x2 frame again painted black, how ever i will still have to drill 300 random holes to fit the fibre optics and have a hollow frame to put the cables in for the led surround, any ideas ?

knowing me, it will turn out not quite as expected and come down and be a few hundred quid down the drain lol
