The old boys at my work wrapped their finishing trowels in an oiled rag.

Dry it with cloth at the end of the day and quick dart of wd40.Hardly rocket science.

IMO most hessian is a bit lose weaved but and old cloth, tea towel or similar, doused in oil would be perfect. The old boys I knew just used to dry off their trowel at the end of a day and give it a quick rub on a floated wall if any rust had appeared over night/weekend.

not trowels but the old boys used to keep joint rules and busks in a sock soacked in oil
