ive been asked by a neighbour if i can knock off all the old crap back to brickwork and then render the wall and skim it, its a window wall and about... 12ftx 7ft, just wondered what i should be chargin for such a job? i dont think ill have any problems taking off the old stuff as i had a poke at it a couple of days ago and it fell apart easily.

also what ratio for sand cement + lime? 6-1-1? shall i add pva to the mix? or plasterciser? should i dampen down the walls with a brush slightly first or anything like that?

any help greatly appreciated :)

youre gonna want about 400 quid mate to be fair to the customer, if you want to compare it to something ive just charged a grand a room for scratch, float, board ceilings and skim the lot...no materials, even used the blokes mixer...
youre lookin at 3 half days, its gonna be a f'ckabout, but you can charge what you want, just dont forget youll be mixin 3 barrowsfull of muck a shot for the renderin, then half a day for one wall...could be two walls but its still gonna take the same time innit...
6:1:1, get a strong lad to knock it up in a barrow on a groundsheet add 3/4 litre waterproofer/barrowful to your scratch coat after that its up to you..i add it again in the float normally but for such a small area..prolly not bother me ass...
or do it in handy bags (cost a fortune)
your lookin at metragex0.015=cubic volume of sand..is about .15 of a cube = about just under a quarter of a ton = 225kg of sand (handy bags of sand are 3 quid for 25kg..ton of sand is anywhere between 25-35 quid small quantities)
my advice? see bod r.e. dricoat(in bags) or church (render) or nicksey (prolly just hardwall the f'cker and be done with it!!)
your biggest rave is gonna be gettin such a small amount of sand on site without payin silly money...see above

asked the people in keyline about dri coat but they've never heard of it, were do i get it from. cheers

thanks for that bigsegs. its back to brickwork, reason being there was some problem with the roof but thats been sorted now, ive leant on the oposite wall and that pushed in like, the whole room needs to be hacked back and rendered again really, only reason this wall needs doing is because someone tried to remove the wallpaper but the wall came away with it ::) ill look into dry coat, would browning be ok to use instead?

forgot to mentuion this the home of my neighbours father who passed away over a year ago and they have been unable to sell it, iot had some sort of damp problem that was down to a problem with the roof, now thats been sorted ive been asked to sort out this wall so they can hopefully sell it on, to be hoenst they're after a cheap bodge job and leave problems for the new owners :-?

in that case dont touch it, you either do it right or not at all, by the way did you put that other price in???

Whats wrong with D & D then skim? About £30 for materials, selling anyway you can charge a little less, win-win.... Or have I missed the point? :-?

if its single skin i'd render and leave an inch gap at the bottom if it's twin skin i'd either h/wall or d+d mate the room will be damp if the chap has passed away anyway because of the lack of heating etc , if in doubt and its an external wall i would go down the s/c route mate
if its external id hack it off and see what youre left with if it's the scratch coat and in good nick you could wet it down and top it with a 6-1-1 to be safe or if it's back to bare brick a 4-1 scratch with w/proofer and 5-1 top coat and if you have a poor key on the bricks you can give it a couple of coats of slurry or if the brickwork has cracked it might be worth looking at eml

its a mix of plaster and an adhesive mate like sbr + cement for external or multifinish + pva for internal , it gives you a minimal key and helps give a bit of suction

Any way round this wall is gonna cost a bit more than usual even with sand and cement it the extra days you got to put in that add the extra cost, you can dot and dab it but you would have to use thermo insulated boards which are 20-30 quid a pop, plus i would put a scratch on to be safe, dri-coat is another option which has been discussed but again its quite expensive at £10 a bag that only does 3m2 at 15 mm your not getting much for your money, as for where they sell it i do know b And q do it where i live and all the builders merchants near me sell it, some of them do limelite which is the equivalant made by tilcon but they only recomend that you use there finish. If the wall does'nt show signs of damp you might be able to get away with a tight scratch coat and just dot n dab it with 9.5 mm board it will probably be your quickest option as you could get it done in 2 days hack off and scratch one day then dot n dab and skim the next day, plus drying times quicker as its just board and is a better option for the customer to get on and decorate:)

ah so many options, ill have to wait till i speak with them again, id certainly prefer to d+d as my rendering skills aren't the best, well i can do it, just not very quickly! tho giving it a scratch coat wont be a problem. hm perhaps i could give it a slurry coat and then d+d... :-/
