hi everyone
i am really struggling to get any work i dont know what to do ??
if this carrys on for much longer i will have to look in to a diffrent career.
any one else having real probs at the mo???

as well as plastering work, i've taken on other jobs, a patio, bits of painting and decorating and a couple of plumbing jos etc so i'm booked till xmas at least. (sorry!)

ive sod all either, but theres been some dead spots throughout the year, then its gone crazy for 6 weeks, then quiet again... drawbacks to stickin to one trade i suppose..

yeah doing a bit of everything at the moment. they say a change is as good as a rest.

if its quiet after christmas i might sign on  ::)

i'm alright for another year ....fingers crossed ......im more worried about prices hitting rock bottom and having to work for 1.50 a metre fook that if that happens i'll sign on too!!

I am living week by week at the min, spending more time working on my websites... I think it may be these that keep the pennies rolling.

I have a strict budget otherwise I am not off round the world in 198 days!!

Danny

ive got an essex bird for a missus...the word budget means 'give it a shove' ;D

Hi Lads, multi skills is the answer i think, i run the NE Tiling training centre and i get loads of plasterers adding tiling to their skills, when times get tough you do what you can to get the £££££ in, gives you another string to your bow. Until the good times come back around youll find everyone doing other trades jobs

Was a bit quiet for a week or 2 recently. Big jobs just kicked off though full re-roughcast and renovation so all the inside to skim. Nice private number! God send ::)

not doin too bad but every other plasterer i know in the village are in other jobs(steelworks) now or askin me for work, its goin to get worse cheers gordon and tony.
brilliant

slow and prices are getting tighter! just been looking on mybuilder. bit like ratedtradesman but without the fee. any you guys use it? how do you get on?

have to be creative to keep working it looks like!

i totally agree with that one Darren, i went on your course at the end of april and it helped out a great deal, granted ive still not completed the job at home (en suite) but that can wait, ive got work steadily flowing through word of mouth. im still at college training to be a plasterer and theres a few people who have done tiling curses and they just dont have a clue, what you teach is 100% top notch. no "fannying on" ;)

i wish You, Tracey, Collin and erm... the other chap all the best for the future as you've certainly helped kickstart mine and everythings been looking up eversince! :)

might i just add something...
ermm when things get tight people run out of money... and courses cost money... sometimes lots of it... you dont do grants for underprivelaged plasterers do you dazza?? :-[

sorry dazza i totally disagree like plastering courses false promises are made .....you can earn x amount after a 3 week course and as for nicking other trades jobs ha ha ha we'd be good at that when even the pro's can't get work

i sound like i work for the bloke the way i keep going on but nevermind lol all i can say tho is that darren doesnt lead people to believe they are gonna go on the course and walk away an experienced tradesmen, the course is very fast paced and theres alot of information to take in, you are shown the best ways to do things and how to do it properly, how to get work etc i could spend ages giving details but ill leave it up to people to experience for themselves.

i took the course at the end of april, did a couple of jobs for friends and family and at the beginning of june i got a contract to tile 25 apartments https://www.stationmeadowview.co.uk/ so i must have learnt something on the course :p

P.S i hate tiling! quite possibly the most boring job ive ever done, some love it some hate it ;D

and if i remember right you are also doing a plastering course putting in somr silly prices for work, so you cant be doing to good at tiling.

Apologies if im wrong

im gonna be the first to admit this i think....
seein as the forums gettin real busy, which to my mind reflects the complete lack of work out there, ive got 1 poxy 100 quid single set job booked next week...
i went down the job centre today and put a bleedin claim in... talkin to the bloke for 20 seconds he goes..'youre a builder arent you..' - not a question...
so i go yeh, how did you know that, he goes... cos theres loads of new claims comin in, a hell of a lot of em are builders and they all got the same look and attitude about em, loads of questions, obviously dont need any help in jobsearch skills...
advice he gave me? take whatever you can do mate, it doesnt look like its gonna get any better...
ive applied for a window fabricating job, a mig welding job, a tiling job and guess what? not ONE job in there for plasterers...

where are you all based?? im down in brighton and still got 4 weeks ahead of me but not had a new call in a month or so i reckon except a small ceiling.

definatly slowing up and i think i'll be in the same boat after this run, saying that next week im layin floors so trying to do other bits and bobs

i'm basingstoke, i'm multiskill but i also do plenty for a screeder who does alot of public work (schools, hospitals etc) watching the news the other night govts spending£3.5 billion on new schools over the next 3yrs so i'll have a piece of that! i'm still busy and still getting 4 or 5 calls a week

or sign on ....... go down weather spoons on tuesday morning with the rest of the boys for a pint of witbread for £1.30  ;D

i agree you wont learnt hat much on a plastering course in sauch a short space of time, i was just referring to tiling really

your right and wrong, i did put in a high price because i felt the job was to big to undertake on my own as im new to it all, so i asked someone else to do the job with me, he took over as he has slightly more experience but went ahead and riced the job on a daily rate even tho it would obviously take us much longer i however would have done that jobe a hell of a lot cheaper if i was the experience and confidence at the time, there was alot of complications as regards regulations which did reflect on the high price also, good job they went for someone else anyway in the end as theres been alsorts of problems with the local council etc, works barely even started there!

tho i on the otherhand give decent honest quotes for the job, if it takes me longer then thats my fault for being slow and new to the trade, i dont advertise other than on the side of the van and ive got a few jobs lined up through friends/neighbours/family etc, looks like keeping my part time supermarket job was a good idea :-?

I actually beg to differ,

I had been labouring for 2 spreads for about a year then I did 2 weeks at GT I learnt enough to get by BUt you learn more as the jobs come in, I am still learning even today!!

I have another spread and 2 labourers working for me now, ok things are tight but I still learnt in a short amount of time.

Ideally time served is best but in this day an age we cant afford to be earning less than £100 pd thatsw hat made me take the next step.

I also beleive that because I am a bit of a perfectionist customers see that hence why I get a lot of jobs I quote.

1 week courses generally are not long enough 2 weeks and you learn the right method then its only practise.

I dont mean to offend just passing on my own experience, also I have done a few jobs for people on here and they can see my work is definiately at a good standard.

Danny

PS tiling is a peice of piss once again its all about method and planning

two weeks ;D ..............sorry danny this is getting embarassing
