As the title say's I have just taken on an apprentice that has just completed his first YEAR at college, he isnt far off getting his NVQ level 2.

After completing a year at college I was expecting him to be able to do most simple tasks to a reasonable standard how wrong I was.

1: He had never seen scrim tape in his life
2: He has never set a bead in his life internal/external
3: He couldnt lay up and what he did was far to thin and was just scraped on
4: He hasnt got any idea what he is doing

He has been to college for a year ...... why is the system failing ???????????????????????????????

soon we are going to be flooded with "qualified plasterers" that arnt worth a wank.

When I asked him what the hell he had been doing for a year he just shrugged and said that they turn up at 8 muck about all day then go home again.....I just dont see the point to it and why are they allowed to do it???.

Rich

i bet he p.i.s.s.e.s all over the two week coursers though ;D............of course he's going to be rubbish plasterings all about practice

Surely he must have taken some sort or practical exam in year ? What exactly does he know how to do ??

He doesnt know how to do anything ..... when i asked him to scrim up i went into the room he had just done and he had taped up all the rows od screws not the joints.

He knows nothing really

Answer = Politics

If he's at college, he's not a dole statistic. These brain dead useless pieces of excrement can't fail.
My wife did an access course at a college a few years ago, worked hard and passed, no problem. There was one student there who was an ex-drug addict, who only turned up when he felt like it, missed countless assignments, and still scraped a pass. This country is finished!

I can beat that ... years ago i signed up for a welding course i turned up for the first day never went back and two years later got all my certificates through the post so i am fully qualified ...... they must get paid when you pass so the college must have blagged it to get the cash.

.....ahem i completely agree old boy

I used to work with a lad, he tried to get to college but because he was working failed to get a place, as the colleges have to give a percentage of places to the less than employable doleites, they get paid to attend!!!!

Can you rewrite that in English mate ?? lol

You think my post is made up ????????

why would you think that ??

you think im a liar ? nothing else better to do then make up stories ?

This forum is a bit mental is it not?? surely someone that has been at college for a year must learn something? If you have the slightest bit of common sense then you will pick thing's up after a day of doing it..
Then you read other post's on here about (plasterers) not knowing how much to price a job at. Then you get people asking what size of stilts to buy? surely they know their own height? not takin the p*ss here but what's goin on?

Once upon a time, my head turned into a fish. The queen came round to see me and brought me some cheesy criss crosses. Why have you brought me turkey? I said. Because fish dont like Trill she answered.

No made up stories here!

Hi new here but totally agree with you. 95% of lads straight from college are not any good. You might get the odd one who has got a bit about them but they ain't plasterers by any standard no matter what NVQ they have been given. Do what I do, take on your own school leaver and introduce them to a local reputable college to attend once a week. He is then getting the site experience and college qualifications under your control. We need to do something to stop these companies from making money out of innocent people who think they can go out and call themselves plasters and earn loads after a two week course which we all know is a load of crap.

great post meadow

rockhard whats rich done all of a sudden? believe me ive seen some idiots come out of college myself.. the only reason theyre their in the first place is cos mum and dad wont have em lazing about the house on the playstation all day, they make sod all effort to find a job so take the easy route thinking its like going back to school, theyre a complete waste of space..
others do try, they do make the effort, its all down to the individual..
the college will give the qual out anyway, like tony says, politics innit..

yep i think its made up and if its not as i say why would you keep him why waste valuable time on a looser thats of course if its not testees

The thread reads" I have just taken on an apprentice" not I have had an apprentice for 6 months. he started with me yesterday so I thought i would give him the benefit of the doubt. He is keen but knows nothing and costs me £20 per day so he is handy to have about.

Please rocksolid dont call me a liar as I am NOT

Rich

segs he`s done nowt just giving my opinion that after 12 months at college you would know somat if not he would nt be getting picked up day 2 cos it already tells me all i need to know about him

im currently on my second year at college...

year 1 was F.C.A which was supposed to consist of not even doing any physical plastering but talkign about boards and wearing PPE :o
but lucky for us our lecturers knew that thats a waste of time so we've been on the tools since day 1

learn to float and set, board + skim window walls + doors + ceilings, screed floors, external rendering, render columns and pillars with perfect margins + floated to hard angles etc

materials used..

bonding
hardwall
browning
multi
board
dura
s + c

yadda yadda

year 2 ( I.C.A )

same as year 2 along with running moulds, flood moulds and made our own vinyl moulds d+d and coving.

im looking to get more onsite experience, dommestic or site so if anyones willing then im willing also 8) own van and own tools also and i make a crackin cuppa!

oh and also i would even consider moving area, as i need to move out in june anyway! if it means i can get some experience, ill move into a shared house with a bunch of joes as the pros will far outweigh the cons 8)

The boy has been at college for 12months and knows jack (german word), he is keen though and costs me very little so he is worth having.

Im still not happy at being called a liar

Rich

i dont think your a liar, i believe you infact.. like i said in my first post, in the first year you aren't actually supposed to even pick up the tools othe rthan to nail on a piece of plasterboard, so if he wasn't given the opportunity that i had at college he was most likely just plodding through the paper work , thats providing he did the FCA first? or did he go straight to the ICA?

thought plasterboard was all screwed ( non german word) these days..
Rich some have got it....some havnt..and some of the little tikes are on drugs ......if hes cheap and can be taught keep him.....he aint learnt anything in 12 months.mmmnnnn...maybe with you kicking him up his aris ( german word) he could? who knows.....just dont give him too much rope to hang himself ...ive been there and done that

we just nail at college as they're easier to remove than screws, tho we're taught to fix using screws in the ouside world
