Hi there. I'm just looking for advice on whether or not plastering might be for me. I'm currently unemployed, and I'm looking over options. I've been thinking about maybe learning a trade. As I'm almost 25 I want to be absolutely certain that what I do will be the right choice. There wasn't too much info online, except this place. Can someone go over what exactly plastering involves, and the qualities you need for it? My main weakness is heights, but I'm guessing that you're never too far up when plastering?

Thanks for any feedback.

Welcome to the forum Stickman have you been in the building industry before ?

I've done a bit of labouring before, but nothing skilled. Out of the trades I've looked at, plastering seems like the one I could maybe handle the best. But then again I don't know that much about it.
The careers advice person was basically telling me what I already knew. At my age I need to be sure.

I suppose plastering seems like it's mostly physical work, whereas some of the other trades require attention to detail etc. But like I said, maybe it's harder than it looks.

could go all day. but like everything it takes time, you wouldt be able to take a job on your own for at least 2-3 years and that will be a easy one at that. 2 do well you have to be into it have a passion, i dont fink general intrest is enuf to get you by.. IMO

plasterings easy mate go on a 2 day course .........if youre a chippy you have to learn a trade and plumbers and sparkys ..............pick up a trowel and go for it mate its a piece of piss honest ;)...........tbh mate go for it but be willing to earn 35 quid a day for 2 years till you know how to skim then another 6 or 7 to call yourself a plasterer ;).........................at least

Yeah, It's probably not really worth it if I don't really know. For a guy like myself with no qualifications, I was thinking maybe a trade would be the best option. In most of the dead end jobs I've had, I've only been clearing around the 200 quid a week mark, which is no good for a person like myself who would like to buy a place of my own by the time I'm 30. If you don't mind me asking, what do you fellas earn compared to your friends etc?

Even if it did suit me, you're talking 3 years before I'm qualified?

My friends have now overtaken me on the money front in this recession so they are always buying me drinks at the bar. But our day will come brothers :D

6 years at least mate and those 6 years should be full of graft and alot of listening .......on a good day you can earn 200 as a subby on a bad one nothing mate

hi stickman, the truth is that there are so many of these training centres turning out so called tradesman after only a few weeks. chippys, sparkys plumbers, etc. whats happened now is the building industry is flooded with these people. for plastering its worse because everything tends to be dot and dab, and skim it, which is basic plastering, some cant even make a good job of that. the choice is yours mate, this forum is pretty soft on wanna be plasterers so its a good place to come in that respect, and theres a lot of info on here. but dont think you will be making a £1000 a week after a few weeks course. try and find a plasterer who will train you, that in itself will be a mission. :-\

The hardest part of plastering is maintaining a steady run of work its a bit like buses you are waiting for one then 3 turn up at once >:( I only know a few rich spreads and they are c**ts or thats just me being jelous ;D or not :-\

As long its enough for a few beers thats all i need ;) we are gonna sell our house and build a f ucking eco house or sum s hit my misses was tellin me tonight :-\

go for it mate i cant see why were not all running lpg vans and living off cheap eco friendly housing!......hows work mate ive got a month left can i come and work for you and ob ;D

Thanks for the replies fellas. To be honest, I think I'll just give it a miss. I'm getting on a bit in age to be potentially wasting more time. Maybe even 3 or 4 years ago I could have given it a shot. I suppose I'll just have to look at plan B, whatever that is.

bod me and lee are on seperate sites and chipping in ..........dryliners are letting us down or chippies who think there dry liners jesus christ ;D

What are you talking about? 25 and you say you're past it!! I didn't pick up a trowel til I was 43! and I seem to be doin alright. But if you're saying "I think I'll give it a miss" it doesn't sound like it's in your heart, so perhaps you're right.
But you'll be spending years training in any trade, start training now otherwise you'll get to 30 and will be saying "if only I started when I was 25!" Go for it mate, and when you're earning loads, remember me!!

The best bloke I've ever trained didn't start in the trade until he was 26. He was working with some other spreads but didn't think they were very good and he wanted to learn the right way, he came on site watched me working for a while and then said he'd like to work for me and didn't care how low the money was, he seemed like a nice bloke and really keen so I took him on. He was brilliant, hard working always watching and more importantly taking it all in. In only about 2 years I trusted him to work on his own and the standard of his work was superb, of course he didn't have the experience to know how to deal with problems but that comes with time. Unfortunately he went back to Ireland after a few more years, top bloke though.
