Maybe a stupid question but does it need to be well eh scratched back?

Let me digress, i have been workin on a hotel rennovation job since monday and we are re-doing the chimney heads 250m2 to be precise however my question is after applying topcoat i find floating it up gives it a nice even finish on the same day rather as scratching the next, it is silicone FT we are using and it seems really rough and grainy is this the norm?

you can float it or scratch back never seen it float finished though heard it goes cloudy

never done it with k rend, but done it with monorex gf g00, treated like sand cement render ruled it off, go over it with float once its firmed up, and sponge float up.

It actually looks ok if you get on it at right time, it gives a nice textured finish which i prefer to the scratch but if it does go cloudy or whatever i suppose i have the option of just scratching it, i would quite like to get one chimney complete in one day thats the reason im asking, i need another two done before saturday so the Irish slaters can press on so time is pretty limited as they are big heads so ideally i want to be coating, floating and finishing in one day.

can you take some pics bill i would like to see the finish might be another option to finishing it

Like Grand says there it seems to turn out cloudy, sort of puffy lighter areas than others but they say on most specs it can be smooth finished. parex gear is supposidly ok to smooth and I think marmo do a coloured render that is supposed to be sponge finished. but.....

Bill what finish are you doing mate is it float finish scraped or something else also are you wondering why it has to be scraped?

Will do mate, get some tomorrow!

Well initially it was a scraped finished the foreman was asking for however i layed on my first coat, straightened and just for buggering about sake i floated it and it floated really well, so i applied my second pass and left it for a bit but with the sun shining on it you could see some highs and trowel marks etc so i gave it a float and it came up pretty good plus it looks nice and flat but if it's a bag of tits in the morn i will just take the scratch to it ie if it go's cloudy or whatever.

Plus i thought FT stood for fine texture?

I have a photo already however it doesnt show a close up of the finish, i will post it anyway just to give you an idea

looks ok bill i think the bit inbetween the bands would look good scrapped back and ft is fine texture

Yeah i was certin it was fine texture although the mix is really gritty and grainy, suppose it's just referring to the finish?

will get some pictures first thing before i decide wether or not to scratch it. Just means the slaters will need to start on sat avo now or at least when im done scratching sat morn:RpS_biggrin:

I know mate and i'm hoping i dont need to but some of the guys on here said it can go cloudy so will wait and see.

See i have another ten heads to do so if i can get away with flaoting them only then i can rattle two out a day next week weather permitting, awkward feckers though on day rate so not to bothered :RpS_thumbup:

He means it can get blotchy with too much cement on the surface in certain areas through excessive or premature floating which aren't lost when painted cos it's mono

Will get some close ups of the finish this morn, looks like its gonna be a scorcher love workin beside the beach:RpS_biggrin:

Some ammount of tits and bums out there today:RpS_biggrin:

No pics though, got some of me work will post later

Bill, rubbing k-rend up like traditonal s&c does go a bit cloudy colour wise, it sounds like you're under pressure to get an awkward job done so I would do whichever is suitable for yourself, I bet those legs ache a bit by the end of the day though, seagulls and spiders are the only things that will see those chimneys when done! Best of luck.

Nice job Bill, Monos are designed to be scraped. W have tried rubbing them up in the past like a traditional S/C render, not only are the an asre to rub up ,but the floating of the gear brings the fines to the surface, we found that this lead to non uniformity of the pigment in the monos. Thus leading to a variation in tones across the surface,or the cloudy look as you descibed it.Only one way to acheive a uniform colour with k rend is to scratch back as designed for.

Waiting for the tits n bums pics:RpS_biggrin:
