the slices in eml are on a chamfer and you should fix it so that the chamfer falls into the wall, it kind of holds the stuff up rather than letting it run off. also it has been around for over 100 years but the chamfer version has only been around for the last 50 of so but before that there were a number of firms that had patents for all different styles of the stuff and it used to be called fire proof expanded metal lath as it was supposed to replace wood laths but it never fully took off because of costs and the invention of plasterboard. also the first plasterboards were around in the 18 hundreds also but they were not paper bound they were basic slabs of plaster which were fixed in place and then stopped in, a bit like the tape and joint system that we use today ;) oh and the slabs were formed on glass so they had an ultra smooth surface.

to be honest mate there is not much i dont know about plastering ;D well traditional plastering anyway, dont know much about the machine plastering or the modern renders or the modern way of marble plastering but every thing else i am quite clued up on ;)
