i no this has been discussed before, and its ranged from about £30-£60 a day.

im looking for a labourer and have spoken to a lad that has given me a hand quite a few times in the past. he can skim small areas to a reasonable standard so has potential i think, has his own transport and has worked in the building trade for about 8yrs or so with his dad so is quite knowlegable. i want some1 with a bit of common sense as he would be helping run my machine

he wants to clear £300 a week, weather cash or cheque, so cheque would be £75 a day, cash £60.

what do u rekon?

depends really if you think he can earn his beans?

maybe do a few weeks on £50 a day then after 4 weeks you can see how well he is doing then if he is worth £60 give it to him if not say no.

But put a date on it dont just say a few weeks say week beginning 18th we will review it

Can you afford to lose £15k a year through your business by paying him cash? I know I couldn't.

i agree and would, but i no he cant afford to, he has his own place etc and has a job, and has said to me a few times hed like to learn with me but he cant live on less. iv explained that he will need to cover his money asap and that he will be there to learn not watch which he fully understands.

it would be a mix of both. if i had cash then i would pay him some, if not then cheque

I'm looking at getting a lab, but have only been going for two months and not sure if I can substantiate paying out a wage.
I'm in the same boat as you except mine only wants 200 a week. Still seems like a lot to find when the bulk of my jobs are domestic 2 or 3 day jobs and he wants to be on the books to guarantee his wage.

Just wondering how you guys pay yours, and more importantly how much would you charge the customer for a lab wanting to earn 40quid a day gross?

1 thing i would say is whatever u do dont take some1 on on the books. absolute pain in the arse. iv dun it before and was nothing but hassle. it costs u both more in n.i and u cant get rid of them that easy if they no their entitlements

yep. Getting a subby in in a few weeks too, so having too register with CIS so to pay a lab through that would be perfect. It's just a shame he wants to be on ze books. GIT!

really he should invoice u and u should try and keep the amounts varied. personally i like to get the customer to pay a check out in their name if poss. and a bit of cash here and there

Accountant reconned CIS is the only way one tradesman can pay another, however bruce is right you have to make sure they either sub to other people or at least do a few of their own jobs through the books.

You cant afford to keep anyone and you cant afford not to unless you want an ealy grave so either way your fu*ked and they want your vote. Pi*ses me right off.

hope the tax man doesnt read this 15 k a year on 1 lad... they will hang you out to dry my man... and go back years... dont pay anyone cash

if they are potentially good plasterers for the future and can get stuff on small areas so in turn make your job easier then they would want between 250 and 300/week it would seem, not what i got for 6days work but thats that if they are purely mixing and humping you can get anyone to do it for £25 day just go to local dolie pub
