lime in render?

You don't have to put lime in your top coat but it can be beneficial. I am presuming you are talking about hydrated lime the powder stuff in bags. Imo 4:1:1 would be too lime rich and could crack. I was told the strongest was 6:1:1 so 4:1 sand and cement would be 2/3 of 1 lime. Use with a plastiser like Febmix. One of the disadvantages I find with lime is that it can stain where you have had droppings. Brick acid won't shift it.

4:1 for a top coat would be to strong and may crack anyway.

Lime is a good addition to SandC rendering, it has more capability to expand and contract with the wall so can mean less chance of cracking over time. can even close fine cracks up should they appear.
