got a job coming up where the gaffa is keen for me to use a lab.
have never used one before, and can't see how i can make one pay to be honest.
just recon that i'll be paying someone to stand around while i'm sweating my tits off.
any tips?
also i'm being paid squ/m and have heard the 1 and 1 gang thing to do is to do a 60/40 split is this right??

your be better off mate getting someonne who will labour but also then earn his money on the trowel. Its not worth having a labourer if your on your own just to labour. Me and Monkey are spraying 80m2 plus a day, thats spraying on, ruling, up and down scaffold to bag machine and clean up ourselves.

a decent labourer is worth their weight in gold mate, theyll have whatever tool at hand before you need it. you don't have to keep stop/starting when your mixing, you don't have to do any cleaning up. they'll do the majority of any carrying etc. when your boarding ceilings its easier. while your dabbing a wall, he can be carrying it in etc..2 people do more work in half a day than 1 does in a day.

60/40 not a chance. Get yourself someone reliable pay him around 40-50 a day. Get him mixing and scrimming at first once hes getting through that quick enough get him doing the beads after that skimming bits of cupboards and so on

i agree, at the minute were down two 2 spreads due to a lack of work but as soon as we get a run we got to 2:1 and its much better.

interesting... the other problem i have is the lad a get to help every now and again is unavailable...
my only other option is an out-of-work builder who has done a spell of sitework and got plastering qualifications.
thinking about getting him in, but would feel embarassed paying him peanuts when he's of a similar standard to me. then again... the mixing, scrimming and beading still needs doing!
any thoughts??

ps-this job is skim only!

get a 17/18 year old. start him mixing. then teach him scrimming which is a piece of piss. saves you doing it though. then when hes competent doing that get him beading. he'll appreciate someone teaching him. and if your on a price you'll probably be able to do another mix a day because you won't have to mess about doing taping and beading between sets.

get a young lad fresh from school and train him to do things your way, also he will be made up with £100 a week it will be the most money he has ever seen ;)

not a bad idea.
a plumber mate of mine suggested going down the local college and looking on the notice board for jobs wanted list... will try fit that in at some point.

no mate, you need to go to the local staff sign or labour ready office at 7am they have people waiting outside for work. atleast you know that you will find a hard worker that will work for poo money.
dont get me wrong am not talking about exploiting someone but it will save you wasting time with workshy lazy fat fuc'ks ;)

I took a new lad on 2 weeks ago he now does all mixing -beading - tapeing - cleaning and next week I'm puting him on the trowel I pay him 200 a week and he is worth every penny also he will be doing the spraying when we get the machine out
