Me trowel is curved :(

Hi all,

Long story short. DIY plasterer.

Got a budget Wickes trowel. I think it's carbon steel as it has rust on it.

Become apparent that there is a curve to my trowel along the length. Currently working on bonding so it's ok for that as I'm using a roof batten as a straight edge.

What do you guys recommend when moving onto finish plastering. Should I buy a brand new trowel or would it be better to look for a broken in trowel on ebay?

Cheers

Chuck it mate, get a "new" 13" carbon Marshalltown, that's all "you'll" ever need.

Was gonna go carbon but realistically it's true I won't be plastering enough to justify it so gonna go stainless.

Does anyone know the difference between these two:

Is it just the fact that the second is pre worn? Pre worn is cheaper?

Cheers

get the pre-worn

give it a good wet sanding down first though with some 600 grit wet n dry especially along the 2 long edges before use

No

Worn and pre worn don't mean s**t

They'll both need work first to be able to be used to finish.

The first is an MXS which is a flatter/truer blade, used to be called a cement trowel. Decent.

The second is a Permashape (perma).
Contoured (banana) - dished blade pre curved , and generally stays that way.

I like MXS trowels a tad more.

Both will work, it's down to personal preference.

Yes mate.....stainless is the G** one..... Carbon is the straight one..... Choose as inclined mate . (y)

First trowel (MXS) comes in both stainless and carbon
£65 and £49

Second - perma - only stainless (from there)

The carbon Permashapes are very good though - just harder to find.

Cheers everyone.

Think I'm going to go with:

Is it true that as a DIYer I'm going to have a better shot with this vs the first trowel? From what you guys have said the first is going to give a flatter wall as a pro but as a newbie I'm going to benefit from the curve a bit?

I'm like Harry Potter buying his wand it's embarrassing really :tonto:

Cheers everyone.

I bought one recently after my tools got knicked and it’s decent. Takes time to break any trowel in, but it’s reasonable enough from the get go, and tbh, you won’t know the difference. It’s not quite familiar to me and worn in like my old trowel but happy enough

Don’t over think it the trowel will choose you

And it’s serving you well young monkey

Me trowel is curved :(

New trowel ready to go :)

They say size isn't everything but a extra 3 inch compared to my old trowel is going to make a big difference, proves 3 inches is meaningful

Tbh mate, the bigger the trowel, the harder it is to use. 13 is where I’m at and no desire/need to go bigger.

In fact, after experimenting over the last few years, I considered going back to an 11 which was where I started.

Not to pee on your bonfire of course!

Exactly. I’m producing top quality work on my MT permashape 13.

What I’m using Casper mate. Replacement for my nicely worn in tyzack that got knicked with the van. Nice trowel though and not bad from the get go, but still gonna take time to get it where I want it.

Yeah I've heard that said a lot. A lot of plasterers going back to smaller trowels as it's easier on the body.

I found it good to use but only used for bonding so far. Will see how it goes when moving onto multi.

Got the second window reveal to plaster so that will be the first test.

If a lot of you guys are using 13inch I'm glad I didn't go with 14.
