Hope you don't mind me posting on here, but I was researching have my house externally rendered and came across this useful forum. I have a 1960s yellow brick built house and would really like modernise the look of it externally. The house across the road had theirs done and it looks fantastic. However, he's a director for major retail company and basically i am just an average guy on an average income..

Anyway, I have been looking at the options to do this cost effectively. The coloured acrylic render systems like K-Rend and Weber products look very appealing. But for a 5 bedroom detached house i have been quoted (as a guide) around £7k excl scaffolding, which is beyond me at the moment. But i have seen post online from plasterers saying a professionally rendered house in sand & cement although will be more maintenance (e.g painting) But can be just as effective and could save £thousands. My concern with this approach is it may be a short term gain for long term loss. I live in a tree-lined road and worried about mildew and moss etc.

I would be interested to hear your opinions, whether it is worth the s&c route or putting the whole job off till i can afford to invest in an acrylic render system? Also was wondering if this type of work could be phased? e.g. get the front rendered, and work my way round the house as and when i have the £. Or should be done in one phase?

Any sensible advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Repoint the brickwork but don't render over it!! You don't know your born to have a brick built house, maybe a few panels rendered would tidy it up?

I woulf say it woupd ve more expensive to sand and cement it...

The modern renders are good and with an external wall insulation system there are lots of benefits....

I would save up and do it :-)

Also others are way way more clued up on this than me so do ignore me ;-)
