Hi there guys

Im new to this one but ive been racking my brains as im stuck in a cack dead end job working with people i cant work with and want to change my path! I have been looking into plastering for some time and would like to train.. Can any of you chaps give me any help and advice?

What pay like, is there much work out there etc etc..

Im 35 and live in essex if that helps at all! Any help would be great thank you..

Hi there Beachbum, I would recommend spending an hour or two reading through the old threads on here. Will give you a real insight as to the state of our trade right now. lots of positives and negatives, happy reading

I wouldn't advise coming into the building trade mate, times are tough and only going to get worse. Pay has dropped and guys that have been doing it for years are struggling so a newbie is going to find it very hard. What do you do now?

As said mate give it some thought ,the only reason the forum is so busy tonight ,is no one has to get up for work in the morning :RpS_scared:

Mmmm not really what i wanted to hear guys.. Ive been looking into plumbing, plastering, landscaping and even being a driving instructor :) im good with my hands so thought building trade would be a good one!

Im a fitter at the moment.. Repairing power tools electric, petrol and diesel kinda sick of it now though

Sounds like a decent job mate, why not start up for yourself? Save you having to work with knobheads.

Plastering can be a great trade to be in, when its good its awesome, when its bad its like being kicked in the nuts all day long! right now its the latter for a lot of us

:) i know what you mean mate on paper it sounds ok but its not its under-paid and like i said dead end!

Not sure i know enough mate to start up on my own and would not really know where to start :(

So why would you want to start up in a trade you know nothing about? I'd do some research on other stuff away from the building trade, contact your local college about evening courses you can do while still working.

There are 24 hours in a day ,and 7 days in a week :rolleyes) so stick to that and they are right mate .

Ok guys im going to have to leave it there for now but would like to pick it up tomorrow!

I guess plumbing is the same as the plastering route?

There's plumbing and gas. Gas is where the money is. My gas man charges £45 a year to service mine (boiler) and £60 including a gas safety certificate. He takes 45 minutes if I am around less if I am not.

Alarm engineer is another well paid job. I have mine serviced yearly. £75 for 15 minutes.

Plastering is hard graft and dirty. There are easier jobs that don't make you an invalid by the time you reach 45.

Yeah it just seems like everything i think i would like to give a go there is a wall i come up against!!

Im sick to the back teeth of where i am there is no prospects i work 7-4pm which is ok but the next week it changes 10-7pm and i get paid a bad wage for it for my age! Its a bad company to work for to say the least guys..

As said i have come up with the idea of plastering, plumbing, landscaping, driving instructor well thats my short list anyways :) just really dont know where to start with any of these and i guess some seem and sound like no go's..

I dont know chaps dont know what to do next really but i dont want to be stuck here in this tip forever and a day!

Forget the driving school job. You need to available 7 days a week at anytime 7.30am till 8.30pm. It's a all or nowt job. Driving schools around here are working for £10 per hour for a block of 6 lessons. That's a franchised driving school with the franchise owners taking a cut, a car and tutor. Even independents charge £15 per hour but is all hours.

If I was looking now it would be the gas fitter.

Dont even start about accountants, ive got 2 days to get my books in :RpS_scared:, Hi and welcome beachbum and good luck pal!

If you are good with figure then be an accountant. We will always need them and with computerization it's a doddle. Looking at other peoples figures would do my head in unless they are in a skirt.
