Overboarding a ceiling

I am going to (try) overboard my kitchen ceiling tonight it had polystrene tiles that I have removed and the old lathe and plaster isn't too clever.

There is some artex underneath.

My question is as a DIYer am I likely to be wasting my time is this one of these things that looks easier than it is?

How much tollerence do I have in terms of the levels of the boards any general pitfals to avoid?

Or should I just wait for a pro as part of the job I am gathering quotes for?
 
personally I would remove any big items and sheet the entire kitchen up.... i mean everything!! I would pull the celiing down and depending on the laths, them too... back to the joists... bag up everything and and a good clean up. then would board and set the ceiling in the normal fashion
 
if its a small one have a go first fnd the centres of the joists ping chalk lines through the middle of them and fix youre boards you would want long screws poss 70mm, dont worry about the odd gap you can chuck a bit of bonding in, one thing you might have probs with is the joists being old might be all over the place so you might end up wanting to rip the f**k*r down and starting afresh
 
I guess I can give it a go. At the end of the day it is only £18 of plaster board and my time!! If it doesn't work out I will just take it back down!! That is as long as I don't go through any cables or pipes LOL
 
P.S. finding the joists shouldn't be too bad as the dining room (same joists) has been boarded by a pro so in theory I should be able to mesure their screws!

if a stippled artex try and knock off any long bits with scrapper

first find the joists with a screwdriver and hammer(do each end of joist nr wall edge ) and mark with pencil line on top of wall

string chalk line through between marks

fix plasterboard with long drywall screws (will depend on thickness of l&p) but 50-70mm

skim as per normal

Dont rip the ceiling down your just making more work for yourself and tonns of crap to clear up, just follow the tips above and you will be fine
 
I wouldn't rip down a ceiling unless I had to. You'll get all sorts of s**t landing on ya. In the past I've had bricks fall on me and someone's vintage porn collection.

thing is i did learn, i tore them down for about three years, had all sorts of s**t come down lol
I remember pulling one down was an old chimney brease all the soot came down and poured on top of me, my
mate came back an hour laster and said i looked like one of the locals!!

another thing is as well, when there is cornice that has to be kept up and u have to
pull it down....going around the ceiling with an angle grinder.... couldn't see a thing!!!!!!!!
