Was wondering on a wall that is lathe and plaster where all the plaster is shot, can you remove old plaster then board over the lathes as long as you can see the joists to screw into? Or do i need to remove all the wooden lathes as well.

THimk i know the answer just dont wanna have to pull all those nails out/avoid mess !!!! >:(

The problem with lathe and plaster walls is the straps are so thin and most often rotten you can do it but I like to take it right back and throw up a new stud

well its up to you mate as long as its solid and you get a good fix to the joists then it will be fine. BUT! what you need to look at is where the laths meet other laths! if they just but up to each other then thats fine but most of the time they overlap and this will cause a bump in the wall if you go straight over it so i would take the top ones and snap em off but dont take them off any joists were they dont overlap as this will cause a dip.

hope thats easy to understand mate ;)

I've done several of these lately where i've removed all the shot lime plaster, ditched the laths and removed all the nails. Time consuming but a better job. You'll find that the studs aren't at metric centres so trimming your boards and running them lengthways is best.

if there are no skirtings or architrave just board straight over the top of the plaster use long screws and 12.5 boards.

if the laths are going to give you problems just screw new batterns down the joists and reboard. its quicker then taking all the laths off and de nailing.

Thanks lads opted for ripping of plaster and removing overlapping lathes. Started to board over the lot of it now. MEssy horrible work. Came home like a coal miner >:(
