overboarding

Hi Daz i put a post up about this a while back... but here goes again.

1 find out which way the joists are running this can be done by looking upstairs and pulling a small amount of carpet back.

2 get hammer out and smash holes to the left or right of each joist at each end of the room... when you have found all joist ends simply snap a chalk line through and this will give you the centre of each joist...

it doesnt matter if the joists are running off as you just cut boards to the chalk line.

hope this helps

ok mate, what we do to avoid as much mess as pos is get a old screw driver and knock through the ceiling along the wall edge until you find 2 joists, measure the between them and if its a newer build this will give you an idea where to knock the screwdriver through next, do this along both sides of the ceiling, once you have all the joists marked , get a chalk line and line across the ceiling so you end up having all the joists marked. then you can start boarding

Would that be the asbestos free artex or the asbestos positive stuff?? it matters becuse if you dont know what your doing you dont know the pottential hazards!!!!!!!!!!
I know this is a plasterers forum but it angers me to read stuff like this where people no F all and charging for work.

how much does it cost to get it sent away and tested skimmin and which company do you use?

Is the technique the same with a lath and plaster ceiling. Ie how do you know your screwdriver has hit a joist rather than a lathe??

Or do you have to use the hammer in this situation?

What I do to find joists with lath & plaster is tap a hammer till I hear a dull thud then use the claw end of the hammer to chip away a small area(1"x2" or 3") so I can see the joist & mark both sides of the joist on the wall so you can then mark the exact middle of the joist on the wall both ends then chalk line as above.
I usually come out about 3-4" from wall when chipping out so when screwing boards around perimiter it doesn't go through board where the plasters been chopped away.
You can still use old screwdriver or 6"nail but just make sure you find both sides of the joist so you know how thick the joists are as they can be anything 1&1/2" 2" 3" etc..
Also once a couple of joists have been located you have your measurement to find the rest.
But they might not always be the same centres so just be aware ;)

If there's loft space above I stick the drill down each side of joist or normaly I just attack it with the hammer

i used to go easy, now hammer in the area like mad!

That's ok as long as there's no loose fill insulation in the loft,
it pours out like sand when you smack a hole in the bedroom ceiling :o
Done a few like that last year, pours out for ages bas tard stuff
