I did my first private job on saturday for a mate, re-skimming his bedroom walls, it all turned out really well and he is chuffed with the job as well.
I am going to give him a hand to decorate his room and was wondering how long should you leave the plaster to dry before painting?
Also to what ratio should you water down your first coat of paint?
I know this is more a question towards a painter decorator but if anyone has background information it would be a great help!!

wait till its all pink, time wise it'll vary depending on weather/ventilation conditions, anywhere between 2 and 5 days tho. mist coat should be 10:1 paint:water

yep, I agree with Pug, Just plastered little lads bedroom and it only took 3 days to completley dry, bin warm an it. However, in winter have known it take a week to dry.

When sizing plaster, I just use Wickes contract matt white emulsion, can add up to 10% water, but rarely
ever bother.

Painting really tells the truth with plaster, Good Luck

if i was u i would use more like 70% paint 30% water and double roll the walls, basicly roll part of the wall then roll back over it staight away then move along, then roll back over that bit, works a treat

At LEAST three days to dry, then coat it with the tenner a bucket matt white. Maybe two coats depending how it looks.
Then put on your colour or whatever paint you have for a finish.
If the roller slides like f*** then the plaster is not ready yet :D
It should be all pink coloured.

Dont buy the 'plaster sealer' coz your waisting your money.

Always a matt finish. Anything else is just filth.

i'd also go 70 paint 30 water, your first coat is to seal the plaster not almost paint it to a finish ant there is no golden rule on drying times its just when it goes pink.

i painted a wall back at college an hour after skimming, the roller slipped all over the shop but we got the paint on so we could see how it'd look when its painted, funnily enough it lookedd like a painted walls :D we PVA'd it and skimmed it again the week later and atleaste 3 other times and it help no probs, how, i dunno! miracle maybe ;D

dotn think id ever dare do it in someones home tho!

Yeah definitely a 70% paint, 30% water mix for me too. Some people water it down 50/50 but if your using cheap paint it'd make it like milk and just ain't practical.

You can buy paint that allows you to go over plaster after 24 hours before it's even dried out properly. Think it's called Dulux Supermatt. Probably expensive way of doing things though.... ::)

b&q do a paint that you can slap on fresh plaster, think its £9.99 for a big tub (white)
