Painting over render with salts coming through

Not really much of a renderer but got asked by an old customer of mine if I can help him. He had his bungalow flat rendered about 9 years ago and its a very god job he got. All the render is still sound and looks good apart from in a few places he has what I think are salts bubbling through the paint. Same as you get on inside walls sometimes where you just scrape it and its gone. Well he wants it sorting as is looking at downsizing in a couple of years so wants to solve the problem now before he thinks about selling. Is it possible to scrape off the salts and then use some kind of textured paint to give it a lightly tyroleaned look? Would this paint just roll on? Do the walls need to be treated with some sort of waterproofing agent/primer before the paint goes on to stop the salt coming through again? Have told him I am no expert in the field but whould see what I could come up with

Any ideas anyone

And no, I don't want to hack it all off and start again

Cheers

I would be interested to know what is causing the salts in the first place. Stop the problem at the source. If you put some coating over it the salts could push it off.

No Steve this is a new job. He has a damp guy coming round on Friday to see if he can find a problem so we'll see after that I suppose.

Anyone else got an opinion?

Hi mate,

I have spoken to someone this morning about this for you, he believes they have products which will be able to help this. The company is Mapei, his name is Martin Andrews. His contact number is:07967 147694.

If you give him a call and say Ryan has advised you to call him, explain what it is about and say you are a member of The Plasterers Forum and he will know who you are.

Hope that sorts you out.

Ryan
