Companies account with nett figures see. The vat on mats is offset against what u charge the customer.
U pay the vat on mats, u get it knocked off the vat u charge the customer and then u pay over the difference so it comes back to nett cost to you in the end. Thats why you deal in nett figures.

If your only buying bits and bobs. On the odd job here and there as in never crossing the vat threshold then you must pay the vat in and the chain stops there well at least when you get paid by your customer.
