Hi guys wonder if you could help me
just been to look at a job today a small bathroom ceiling which has had a leek coming from above and a bigger kitchen ceiling which has water damage as well. the bathroom ceiling has dropped quite a bit in a small area & the kitchen is the same but hasnt dropped as much (looks like the corner of the board has come loose from its fixing). both ceilings have been artexed. what is the best way to go about this job? i thought cut away bad bits back to nearest joists fix new board in the holes then re board whole ceiling? your help would be much appreciated guys many thanks john. ps would you scrape off high points of artex before over boarding ?

personally mate i wouldn't overboard, as you say cut back to joists patch then make sure theres no play or dampness anywhere, scrim, then just PVA or use bondit depending on the artex - scrape off high spots with a floof scraper, you will have to get right in there with a sharp scraper round the edges of your patch before scrim so ya get a nice join. Then skim it. Ive never had any problems skimming artex, depends on how old it is an if its painted etc ;)

ok thanks v much tree, what problems do u look for with the artex can u not skim if its been painted?

run your finger along it, if its powdery thats not a good sign could be old distemper, sucks like f**k an you run the risk of it coming down on your head in one big sheet soon even after liberal coatings of pva it just sucks the juice that gets behind it an hey presto :'( However if it feels tough to break a bit off, no powder, shiny look about it i'd say no problems. just pva first thing but preferably the night before, let it dry , an then again before you knock up. Ive been lucky ive never encountered distemper yet but ive heard its a bitch and would recommend overboarding if thats the case
