Hi,
I rendered a scratch coat to a red common brick wall at the rear of my Bungalow a week ago using a 3 1/2 to 1 mix with SBR added at 5 to 1 in the mix water.

For the second coat to take the 10mm pea gravel please advise on the following:

Should I coat the scratch coat with SBR mixed 1 to 1 and while still tacky render on to the scratch coat?

Should this second render mix be 4 to 1 with SBR added at 5 t0 1 in the mix water ?

Can I pebble dash the second coat straight away?

Should the 10mm pea gravel be dry for dashing?

Many thanks for any help and advice

Think you will get suction on your scratch. Prime with a sbr/water mix and let dry. This will kill the suction.

Give a light licking of sbr mix again and let it pick up a bit before rendering. Rush it and it will slide at this time of year.

Use dry pebbles in the cold season, wet in summer.

Your mixes are too strong imo. 5:1 top coat it strong enough.

A bit of sbr in your mix will cream it up.

Shouldnt be any need to prime with sbr aslong as you put some waterproofer in the first coat, just give it a spray with water.
As rigsby said be carful with top coat sliding, especially with 10 mm gravel. Some can be alot bigger, an over soaked wall, heavy coat and large chips = sliding

He never mentioned using a water proofer in the base. I did a job with sand, cement and sbr at 2.5 ltrs to a Belle mixer full and it sucked. Apart from the suction it was one of the creamiest mixes I have used.
