As above. Why is it that some " plasterers " don't know the real basics?
Please please tell me daz1968 isn't a plasterer and only a DIY'er, otherwise this forum has hit a new low for the short time I've been on here and it didn't even involve Spunky ;)

click on someones profile name and click show last posts of this person... should tell you what your after..

its because the paper wraps round from the light side to a bound edge and the darker paper is now of an inferior grade which could result in the failure of a joint

i always thought it was some sort of 'special' paper too, whats the crack with old boards? like when they suck like buggery... is the 'specialness' of the paper wearing off? accounting for 'dust' as it happens straight off old pallets sometimes... they sort of 'yellow off'...

in the 80s everyone plastered the dark side and the whte side was only used for artexing as said earlier then there was a statement issued by bg that said they would not be held responsible for any problems with adhesion where the darkside had been plastered and only the lightside was to be skimmed, i think the dark side is slightly waxie or something but dont quote me

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah the olden days, darkside out used to cause something we used to call board moles where lumps would appear where the paper hasnt stuck if you look on the back of plasterboard its still happenin.

what it is about is recycling the paper on the back is now shite because they are looking at being competitive as in the content of the actual board its now mostly flue gas gypsum an after product from when they cook the plaster

fackin 'board moles' ;D love it! next time i get them little pimples im gonna tell em theyve got board worm :P

ive skimmed the brown side loads of times mate .....usually following my tacking ::)...........never had any comebacks but stick to the grey ;)

They use a different adhesive on the brown paper which can fail when it absorbs the moisture from the skim, the board isnt pressed as flat as the white side (feel it next time and you will feel ripples) and as mentioned the overlap from the white paper.

grand is spot on with that, in the late 80s bg had competition from la farge, knauf, redland, there boards were cheaper, to compete bg cut down on the quality of the board, to bring costs down to compete. this resulted in everyone being told to skim white side only. got so bad that bg was telling some merchants if they did not buy their boards, they would not supply them with plaster. bg had no competition for years until then, they had it all sown up. know this cause me dad use to sell boards for redland, in the end redland give it up. are bg still top dog ?

Cant see the problem years ago it was different but as has been said it tells you on the board plaster white side only why would you do it any differrent and risk failure.
Lucius.

give it 10 mins and theyll be carrying on ' yep we used to have our own stick for mixing finish ....and then there was the rake and shovel .............................. ;D

warrior still uses his old shovel for mixing finish...
reckons the splinters off the sheet of ply gives it a better key... :-\
