Hi, Im about to start plastering a celing, invloves stripping old polysterene tiles then skimming. Did this in upstairs room, removed tiles, 2 coats of Multi finish, all went well. However this is downstairs, The room about to be done, has a odd dip down celing, runs full legnth of room, about 1ft away from wall.

This dip is in 3 rooms only downstairs, happend in 1970s when house was altered not got better but not got any worse , walls moved, dormers built....Does anyone know what this dip could be? iv looked down on celing in roof (bungalow, only front due to dormers on back) and cant see any obvious faults.

Another room that needs its celing stripping and skimming, also has a simalar problem only its 2 inches out at one corner, as in that 1 corner of celing drops 1-2 inches, if this had 2 coats of multi would this be noticable? was thinking of using Bonding coat on celing befour multi just to take out any unevenness. Also when i did other room i PVAed celing 3 times and still had slight problem with suction, would WBA or bond it be better? Any advise is welcome, Im not a plasterer, but im good at it when i get things sorted out. Sorry for this post dragging on, Thankyou.

i had it in my house after i overboarded it stayed the same think its just an old house thing i wouldnt panic i bonded the worse bits out and skimmed it if its on the angle snap a string line and it gives you something to work too the reason could be joists or old board sagging if you dont want to rip it down and sort it you can fire a few screws in too make sure it hasnt let go off the joist and bond it

Spunky you've come over all serious and knowledgeable lately, are you feeling OK?

hi everyone thanks for help, still welcome any help. Thanks for sugestion bruce, but cant really install false ceiling, the idea is to keep all height possible (not high rooms) and to get rid of any tiles and to have it plasered for now then papered at some poing. Thanks, also for got to say house is mid 60s and dip in celing was done in 1970s when house was altered.

if its not too bad then bond it out, if its quite bad then why not rip it down and batton out any joists that need it.

I aint come acros many sorry ANY ceilings that have had polystiryne tiles on you can get away with skimming after removal. Its usually a overboard job.
If the ceiling is damaged theres no point putting more weight on a already damaged ceiling.

Thing is i dont really want to rip entire celing down, as the dip has been there since 1970s, and not got worse so seems sound, just the dip part affecting the look of the plaster. Was thinking of screwing the boards to give them more chance of holding plaster weight, all be it not much weight. After doing other room, same thing as this one, polysterene tiles, only without a dip everything went well, PVA couple of times, skim 2 coats, and it look well.
