Hi,

I am relatively new to plastering and am still getting to grips with it all.

I have read the FAQ's section which has helped a lot.

I started off with a really cheap finishing trowel (£1.99) but have now upgraded to a pre worn marshalltown trowel (PB13SSDh).

My question is, should I master skimming walls before I attempt my 1st ceiling? and if so can I plaster the ceiling after the walls?

Thanks in advance.

If your just learning id say crack the walls before doing attempting a ceiling but in the real world of plastering you would usually do the ceiling first then the walls for obvious reasons.
Doesnt really matter what trowel you use pal you should get the same finnish wih a cheapo job or an expensive one if you know how to use it.Do you think a Spear and jackson spade would plant a better tree than an argos one ? or a jamie oliver chopping board will cut your runner beans any better than one from the pound shop?your trowel its just a tool !!!

Thanks for the advice.

The cheapo trowel I bought had a flimsy plastic handle which broke within a few uses.

I read on this forum and other places that a decent pre-worn trowel will provide better results... I understand that its not the tools, its the person using them that really counts but just wanted to give myself the best chance of getting a smooth finish.

If I skim the walls 1st will it be harder to do the ceiling afterwards?

Thanks in advance :o)

no you just need too wet brush the corners
but you cant get a good finish with a pound shop finishing trowel like you can with a propper plastering trowel

Welcome to the forum steve :-)

Glad to see you bought a good trowel in the end :-) It will make things a lot easier....

It will be easier to skim the ceiling first but if you have never skimmed one then it will be a challenge... you can always sand it or fill it if it looks bad or overboard it :RpS_thumbup:

Good luck

jase i have to disagree mate, a trowel is not just a trowel. it takes a good while to get a new trowel up to scratch, you can get an acceptable finish with a new, decent trowel, but i'd bet anyone they cant get an acceptable finish with a pound shop special.

Thanks for all the responses.

I've got a pre-worn trowel so hopefully it wont take too long to get it up to scratch?

Are there any good guides for doing a ceiling for the 1st time?

Thanks in advance :RpS_biggrin:
